Episode 80
I leaned my head out of the window and looked down at the garden below.
The structure of the villa’s garden was quite unique.
The windows were deeply embedded within the outer wall pillars, making it difficult to see the window frames from below.
But if you looked down, you could see the garden.
There, Dylan was murmuring to the empty space.
“I have something to say.”
I looked at Dylan’s tense expression.
As a knight, he should have sharp senses, but he seemed too nervous to notice my gaze.
Dylan seemed to be preparing for something.
“So, um….”
He knelt down on one knee, facing the empty space.
What is he planning to do?
He took a small box out of his pocket.
As I saw the small velvet box, my mouth dropped open.
“Could it be a proposal?”
My heart was pounding like crazy.
Since we were going to have a wedding, maybe he was proposing again?
“Has the time finally come to invite Ford to the wedding?”
If we are getting married soon, does that mean I’ll become a fall bride?
Before the wedding, Dylan will descend from his rank.
But if we both become nobles, won’t it be difficult to get a divorce?
Wait a minute.
Why am I getting so excited?
Once we leave the newlywed town, there is no need to continue this contractual relationship.
I was slowly confronting my emotions.
The protective shell surrounding me was breaking, and I could vaguely feel what these emotions were.
It was exciting that I could spend more time with him.
I laid on the bed, still holding the curtain aside.
My heart was pounding so intensely that I needed some care.
Beds are truly the best.
But it was at that moment when I heard someone knocking on the door.
“Ishael.”
He opened the door and came in.
Dylan, who had been in the garden, stood there.
Under the moonlight shining through the window, he looked like a different person.
It seemed like he used magic to change his appearance.
A long time ago, he once told me, “I’m a beggar.”
Perhaps due to debts, he changed his appearance and lived in hiding.
“It’s okay to keep a secret like that.”
I cheerfully said to him, ready to accept all secrets.
“Tomorrow, we will finally go to Grand Duke Castilla’s Land!”
“Yes, that’s right. More than half of the duke’s curse has been lifted, and the plum blossoms have bloomed everywhere.”
“It feels like we’re going on a journey during our journey!”
As soon as I finished speaking, a small vision appeared before me.
Inside a house filled with burning flames, two people were sitting, holding hands tightly.
“Even though we can’t go outside right now, let’s take a walk together in the future.”
“Yeah! I promise to take a walk with you later, brother. Promise.”
Memories that I thought were just hallucinations flooded back to me.
I grabbed the aching nape of my neck.
Perhaps they were my original family. After this journey, I must definitely find that person called “Brother.”
Just as I made up my mind, Dylan smiled faintly and said, “Yes, let’s take a walk together.”
Strange.
It felt like his voice and the voice of the boy from my hallucination overlapped.
I was staring blankly at Dylan, but then I snapped out of it.
That’s impossible.
I must be overreacting.
* * *
At that moment, inside the Tower of Sage.
The interrogation of the former director of the <Sangermane Nursery> had been quite satisfactory.
Of course, the former director, Paul, mostly spouted useless nonsense.
“Honestly, I wrote it down on the list, but then I forgot.”
“Really?”
“…Ah, yes, really. There was a magic spell on the list, you know.”
Paul’s lips twitched in irritation.
“Tell me everything you remember.”
“Uh… well, I sent some of the kids here and there.”
“Tell me properly.”
“I sent one girl to the Beet family as a maid. I heard that the Beet family is quite cruel to maids, and she probably died.”
“Did you see that trash of a person?”
“I mean, everyone is like that and-“
Claude slapped his hand over Paul’s moving mouth.
“Just hit him lightly for now.”
Paul shrugged his shoulders and mumbled.
“Oh! Now that you mention it, I remembered something else. I also sent one to the Lorelei family.”
Silence fell at those words.
Claude, who seemed unable to grasp the situation, asked in confusion, “Why?”
“The Lorelei family? They’re obsessed with gambling. I caused a commotion about sending one child to them to raise as a gambler.”
“….”
“I regret sending her for free. She was quite pretty-looking.”
The gazes of Duke Saboia and Claude met in the middle.
“Hmm, there’s nothing else I remember.”
Duke Saboia raised his fist and said, “You need a good beating.”
The fist was closer than magic.
Seeing this scene, the silent Mung Mungi thought while looking casual.
His grandfather used to be a very refined person.
Come to think of it, the Saboia family had their eyes only on Ishael.
“Hmm, wait. There’s something strange here.”
Mung Mungi scratched his head as if he was dusting off the puzzle.
Come to think of it, Ishael didn’t know that she was from an orphanage.
She didn’t know anything about <Sangermane Nursery> at all.
There seemed to be something puzzling.
And Mung Mungi, like a child deity, loved solving puzzles very much.
“Ishael is from <Sangermane Nursery> and may have lost her memories!”
And if Diana is also from <Sangermane Nursery> and not dead, she might have lost her memories too.
Mung Mungi smiled proudly, as if he had made a remarkable discovery.
Meanwhile, the former director of <Sangermane Nursery>, Paul, was hit hard and collapsed to the floor.
After that, Duke Saboia and the young deity Mung Mungi bumped their heads together again.
They were looking at the meticulously prepared list of individuals from <Sangermane Nursery>.
“Ah, my head hurts. I really don’t know what this magic ritual is. Do you know, grandfather?”
“….”
Duke Saboia didn’t answer and turned to Mung Mungi.
“Do you have any other prophecies about our child?”
Mung Mungi tilted his head slightly.
“Not so much a prophecy, but I’m curious about something. It’s about Sister Ishael.”
He talked about Diana, but he mentioned Ishael’s past from <Sangermane Nursery>.
Duke Saboia and Claude were also curious about Ishael’s background, as they were both from <Sangermane Nursery>.
Mung Mungi raised his head and spoke the next words thoughtfully.
“Why didn’t Sister Ishael know that she was from an orphanage?”
“Really?”
“If she wasn’t adopted at a very young age, she would have known… But she seemed to have lost her memories.”
“Hmm, maybe she lost her memories?”
Duke Saboia matched his trembling gaze.
“Lost her memories?”
At that moment, the orphanage director, Paul, scratched his chin and said, “Hm. There were no intentional memory losses. But I think there was a child who lost their memories from the beginning.”
At Paul’s words, Mung Mungi grasped a clue and slapped his thigh.
“Then, maybe she lost her memories due to an external shock. What could that external shock be?”
Something seemed to be within reach, but they couldn’t grasp it.
Duke Saboia, Claude, and Mung Mungi looked at each other.
Then Paul murmured with a frown, “Ah, now that I think about it, there might be some behind-the-scenes stories of the orphanage kids written in that list. Did I record them on video?”
Suddenly, their eyes fell on the list.
They had to interpret it.
Duke Saboia slowly flipped through the list.
“By the way, while talking with Her Majesty, I found a way to decipher the ritual.”
“Really?”
Grandfather was unstoppable in his belief that he could find his granddaughter.
Duke Saboia’s eyes glazed over halfway.
His mind was racing at the fastest speed it had in the last fifty years.
Finally, Duke Saboia went back about fifty years in his memory and found the perfect hint to unlock the magic ritual.
“You need to find the Code Book in Alfred’s room.”
The <Code Book> was a concise compilation of some magic rituals.
“A long time ago, I saw a style of magic ritual arrangement in Alfred’s room.”
He got up and attempted running, something he hadn’t done in over thirty years.
“Ha, grandfather! You’ll die if you do that!”
[Duke!]
Dumbfounded, young deity Mung Mungi and Claude hurriedly followed him.
But Duke Saboia couldn’t hear anything.
All that occupied his mind was the need to uncover the behind-the-scenes stories recorded in the list.
