10. Hidden Events (1)
Translated by: ???????
Evidence of a number of smuggling mafia groups’ involvement in the disappearance of women has been revealed.
At the order of the crown prince, the case has been assigned to the Organized Crime Investigation Unit of the capital’s Londinium Metropolitan Police Agency.
As Edward and Castel promised, a team of heavily armed investigators not only dug into the case carefully, but also mobilized a mounted unit to track it down.
Apparently, Basilio’s information had not been false, it was soon reported that they were able to discover a rundown barn in a deserted area of the Shillings district.
Furthermore, the mages’ detection spells revealed that the barn was guarded day and night by men who appeared to have an appearance similar to snakes.
All that was left for them was to swoop in, arrest the criminals, and rescue the captured women.
Eve threw on some raggedy clothes she didn’t mind getting dirty, and prepared to head out.
Her face was hardened due to her complex emotions.
She’d been locked inside her room all day, and only looked over the books and manuscripts Edward had given her.
As he’d said, the books she’d found inside the Vermell’s study were missing some parts.
Even the supposedly original coded books she found, that she’d never seen in the game before, had missing parts.
‘If Edward knew that this was a world inside a game, he would have looked at me and asked me who I was, not recognized me as ‘Eve‘ immediately, because Eve is a player character, and Edward was a character who was just going through the motions of his life in the game.’
Eve fiddled with the sheath of her longsword at her waist and bit her lower lip.
‘Life repeating itself. I thought it was a ridiculous theory, but… What if this isn’t just a world inside a game…?’
However, it could not be said that this place she belongs to now had nothing to do with the game ?For Eve.?
Otherwise, there was no way for her to explain the existence of Octavia, the NPC characters in the game, and the male protagonists who were attracted to her as if she was a magnet.
Her head was a mess.
Eve tried to clear her head and headed downstairs.
She found Castel in the lobby, he had already arrived and was waiting for her, while Alberic, who had just come down, greeted her.
When Castel spotted Eve entering the lobby, he hesitated for a moment, not knowing how to greet her.
Eve smiled sheepishly and held out her hand lightly, and only then did he calmly hold her fingers and pretended to plant a kiss at the back of her hand.
He was careful not to touch her hands with his lips.
“You’re early.”
“Yes. I’m thinking of starting a little early just in case.”
“Well, you never know what might happen, so it’s better to be prepared, and I’ll be right there.”
Eve nodded and took Alberic’s arm as they headed outside.
Once they were out on the porch, right in front of the entrance, Alberic turned to Eve and said in a low voice,
“…Take care of yourself.”
“Okay. It’s quite a distance away, so I’ll probably be home late, maybe it’ll take a couple of days for us to recover the missing women. So don’t wait.”
“You don’t have to worry about it.”
“Why are you being so stubborn?”
Castel, who was casting a subtle glance at the back of Eve’s head as she turned and headed for the carriage, gave a quick bow to Alberic and followed after her.
The figure, who was watching the two people get into the carriage through a small window in a distant smaller carriage, immediately urged the coachman to follow them.
Shortly thereafter, the carriage carrying Castel and Eve was on its way to Londinium’s central station.
?
The train they were riding on was leaving Londinium for the southern end of Britannia.
The Shillings District was one of the less developed districts within Kelverton, so there was no train station and they had to get off in the neighboring Saturn District, and travel there on horseback.
The pair disembarked at South Saturn Station and rode out of the station.
Although they were not too far from the capital, unlike the Central City, the area around South Saturn Station was not heavily developed, and even the main street was fairly deserted, as it was mainly home to private residences and worker’s quarters.
Of course, the sun hadn’t set yet, so most of the workers were still at work.
The two of them rushed through the still quiet streets, which would have been bustling at night, and arrived at the stables Castel had prepared for them.
The man who seemed to be in charge of the horses was a young man in a shaggy brown waistcoat.
He was dressed to look like an ordinary free man, but saluted them with a military salute, he then opened his mouth to speak.
“You may depart immediately.”
Castel accepted the salute with a nod, then took the reins of his horse without a word to the man.
He then turned his attention back to Eve.
“We’ll have to speed up. I hope you don’t mind.”
“I’ll be fine, let’s go.”
The young man was curious about Eve’s identity, but Castel was not the type of person who would go through all the trouble to introduce people in the middle of a mission, and Eve didn’t take the initiative to introduce herself either, because she did not want to draw attention from a man who wasn’t even a playable character in the game.
After ignoring the young man’s curiosity, the two continued on their way in silence.
The two silently lead their horses out of the stables.
Castel was about to ask Eve if she needed help climbing into the saddle, when he saw her leap up in the stirrups and settle into the saddle with a graceful curve, her buttocks were firmly planted on the seat.
So he turned his head to follow suit.
“I’ll take the lead, and we’ll pick up the pace slowly.”
“Okay. I’ll yell if I feel like we’re going too fast.”
Eve replied with a smirk, quickly grasping the implications of Castel’s words.
At Eve’s words, the man quickly spurred his horse into a trot without looking back in her direction.
Eve reached out, and slowly stroked the nape of the big black horse’s neck, while whispering softly in its ear and nudging it with her foot.
As Castel had said, the horses were picking up speed with each passing minute.
He deftly moved his hand over the reins to control the horse’s movements, but he could also sense Eve’s presence, stretching out and catching up to him from behind.
After thinking that he didn’t have enough time to spare, Castel soon urged his horse on and sped off down the street at as much speed as the road would allow.
Passersby were busy going about their own business.
They then saw the tall black steeds speed down the road, their faces dazed as they watched them trot away.
Areas on the outskirts close to the capital were often the scene of incidents, so the sight of mounted patrols bustling about on Black sturdy horses was nothing new to the people of the Saturn district.
After riding for a while, the landscape began to reveal more open plains than houses.
They were picking up pace, with the wind at their backs.
Eve lowered herself, and gently urged her horse to keep some distance between her, and the horse in front.
It was the first time she was actually able to ride a horse properly.
Even as a hunter, she had occasionally been lucky enough to borrow a tamed four-legged beast to ride into a dungeon, but it was only under Margaret’s tutelage that she could truly learn the art of horsemanship.
At first, of course, Margaret’s intentions were to simply get Eve on the back of a horse to do some cantering and trotting.
It was simply to satisfy her curiosity, but to her surprise, Eve was very good with horses.
Not only did she have a great sense of how to move her body, but the horses seemed to obey her commands, and were following her lead as if she’s been riding for a long time.
Not long after she learned how to ride, Eve also learned how to take on enemies with a spear or club while on horseback.
It wasn’t an in-depth lesson, as Margaret wasn’t particularly skilled with a spear either, but learning the basics was helpful enough.
Eve couldn’t figure out why the horses were listening to her.
All the horses she’d ever encountered so far followed her like docile puppies— Not just Alberic’s brown horse which had a white pattern on its legs, that made it look like it has soaked its legs in cream, but also the fine-coated milky white stallion she’d gotten to learn horseback riding, and the big Friesian black stallion she was now riding on.
Come to think of it, most animals seemed to like her, not just horses.
Even before she had recalled the memories of her previous life, that is, before she was thirteen, Eve seemed to have easily won the favors of various animals.
‘… Just like a D?sney Princess…”
Her mind was racing, but her body kept up with the pace.
After a while, she realized that Castel, who was ahead of her, was finally slowing down.
Eve looked up at the sky, the sun was just barely reaching the horizon and turning the entire sky a deep red.
She realized that it was almost time for them to arrive, so she tightened her grip on the reins and slowed down.
Castel and Eve halted their horses in front of a dilapidated barn.
It was a sheep ranch in a subdivision quite a distance from the abandoned farmland where the women were presumably being held.
They tied their horses to one side of the barn and walked right into it.
If they traveled in groups, they might be picked up by the Viper Gang’s minions that spread across the capital.
So the investigators eventually took separate routes and converged on the barn in the pasture.
Eve quickly scanned the group inside the barn.
There were six men in blue police uniforms.
Two mages with auburn hair, three young men in their twenties, and an Aura tuner who looked to be in his mid-to-late thirties.
‘He must be the leader of this team.’
“Welcome.”
“Make room for two.”
Castel immediately looked at the men and gave them a salute.
He was immediately greeted with a return salute from them, and he immediately opened his mouth.
“The other teams are coming on a slightly longer route. They had the same departure time as my team, so they’ll probably be here soon.”
“We’ll begin the pre-briefing as soon as the rest of the party arrives.”
They didn’t seem at all offended by Castel’s natural deference, after all he was a man who wasn’t even their immediate superior.
On the contrary, several of the younger men looked at him with envious eyes.
‘The greatest sword master in the empire…. He’s definitely their idol. He’s probably almost as popular as a boy from a male group.’
At that moment, someone spoke to Castel in a friendly manner.
It was a man with greenish-brown eyes who seemed to be the oldest of those gathered in the barn.
“Is this the guy you were talking about?”
“Yes.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Sergeant Glen Taylor with the Organized Criminal Investigation Unit, and this is my team.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Eve Therouanne.”
They had agreed in advance that Eve was one of Castel’s men, so she used the name she used before she became a noblewoman.
At the sound of her voice, the faces of the men gathered in the barn changed slightly.
Even Sergeant Glen, who greeted her first, seemed a little surprised.
“Ah… You sure about… Being here?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure? Taking down criminals is no small feat, they can be pretty rough.”
“I’ll be fine.”
Eve lifted the corner of her mouth in mild response to Sergeant Glen’s concern.
The emotions on the men’s faces were less about her safety or her abilities than they were about having to ‘Take care of‘ her.
Their inner thoughts were plain for Eve to see, and she stood straight, while trying her best to hide the giggle that threatened to break out of her lips.
