Chapter 4  Won’t Let You Succeed 

‘Not good!’

Leaving them will only lead to their death.

Yu Sheng asked in a low voice, “You’re not injured, are you?” The two were so frightened that they couldn’t speak but just shook their heads.

Considering the safety of the children, they shouldn’t stay here.

She can just send the whole family to harvest from the tree tomorrow since she has already marked the way to the chestnut tree.

While on the way back home with the two children, they came across villagers that had just finished their work and were going home to rest.

A few of them were in a happy mood, but when they saw the two kids’ filthy and ragged appearance and the obvious signs of harm on their arms, they turned furiously to face Yu Sheng.

They have just speculated maliciously and had preconceptions.

“Li’s daughter-in-law, this is terrible. No matter how much you dislike the children, you still can’t let them go to the mountains this late.” 

“Yes, even if you usually beat the children, but now you want to endanger them.” 

The children lowered their heads and did not speak, looking as if they had been wronged.

“In consequence, the children will suffer. It’s like letting a few children take care of themselves because there are still other children left at home.” 

Looking at the busybodies around, Yu Sheng asked angrily, “How would you know it’s my fault?” 

One of the middle-aged women, carrying a basket, said heatedly, “Who knows what Li’s daughter-in-law can do besides beat up her children and use her own things to supplement her mother’s family, what else could be said? She’s a loser, her father died and her husband was killed.” The bodies of the original owner’s father and husband were all not found.

One was gone on the eve of the wedding, on a hunt for fur to create mountain quilts. And the other went hunting because she wanted to eat meat, but he encountered a pack of frightening wolves on the way to the mountain.

The middle-aged woman has never confronted the original owner.

Yu Sheng is not the kind of person who is willing to suffer in silence.

These villagers are all making a fuss, they just listen to what they want to hear, and they dare to talk nonsense in front of them

The second son saw the scene of his mother scolding the villagers and stood beside her with a face full of embarrassment.

The third son was clever, seeing the situation was like this, he boldly came out to speak up for Yu Sheng, “Aunt and uncle, it was our mother who rescued us.”

Everyone was surprised.

‘Yu Sheng, who has no conscience, has a kind heart?’

They couldn’t believe what the child had said and thought that Yu Sheng might have forced the child to tell lies.

Someone comforted Li Sansheng and said, “You don’t need to defend her. We know how she is, and you have been wronged. You can come to our place. Although you won’t be able to eat enough food, we can still make soup with some wild vegetables.”

Yu Sheng sneered.

This group of people may have good intentions on the bright side, but they are still just joining in on the fun.

‘I really want to follow their wishes. If something goes wrong, these children will become orphans, and they will probably all run away in hiding.’

“Well, since you all are so kind-hearted, why don’t you help me raise these children? Don’t just open your mouth and start talking casually.” Yu Sheng crossed her arms and taunted.

The crowd dispersed immediately, and everyone looked around, pretending not to hear.

They don’t have enough to eat, so how could they have the leisure to take care of other people’s children?

The third son knew that the words of these uncles and aunts should not be taken seriously, and he still had to live with his mother, so he hurriedly smoothed things over.

“This boy thanks his uncles and aunts. It’s just that my older brother and I have fallen into a pit. Our mother is very tired from going to the mountain to rescue us after recovering from illness. If there is nothing else, we will go home now.” 

Yu Sheng was a little surprised. She raised her eyebrows and glanced at the third son.

The nearby villagers somehow accepted that they had misunderstood Yu Sheng after hearing the third son’s words. But the elders raised their heads and said, “Fine, all we do is quarrel everyday and waste everyone’s time. Everyone, go back and rest, we’re all in a hurry to eat.” 

“Then eat more, your mouth can’t spit out nice words anyway.” Yu Sheng was so angry that she left right away.

The arrogant person was left speechless by Yu Sheng’s words and walked away.

The crowd dispersed, Yu Sheng and her children can finally returned home.

A scent slipped out of the stove before they could even enter the house, the second son couldn’t believe it.

‘The smell of steamed buns!’

He swallowed his saliva greedily, forgetting the fear he had before.

‘Is this a dream?’

The eldest daughter-in-law came out of the house, saw Yu Sheng coincidentally, and greeted her, “Mother, you’re back.” 

“Mother!” The fifth child also rushed out from the house and ran to Yu Sheng’s arms.

The rest of the children that remained inside were surprised.

When did they get so close? The fifth child was the most afraid of Yu Sheng because of the attempt of selling her.

Too lazy to pay attention to their thoughts, Yu Sheng held the thin fifth child in her arms, feeling a sense of belonging for the first time.

Her heart turned sweet as honey, and her stern face relaxed as she smiled while hugging the fifth child in her arms.

“Are you tired?” The fifth daughter frowned when she saw the scar on Yu Sheng’s head.

Upon hearing this, Yu Sheng felt that the fifth daughter was very caring, unlike those brats, who would only provoke her anger and confront her.

She coaxed, “How can I be tired when my fifth daughter is so caring?”

The harmonious scene didn’t last long, as the fourth son came out.

He hummed, then greeted the fifth child. 

‘The old hag just now is behaving kindly. There might be some tricks she had hidden behind her back.’

‘Don’t let little sister relax her vigilance and get sold.’

Thinking of this, he bared his teeth at Yu Sheng and said viciously, “I will not allow you to succeed!” 

Yu Sheng was left wondering, what’s wrong with this kid?
