To Be the Perfect Childhood Friend - Chapter 61
“Anita.”
“Yes.”
Seeing Nathan wandering around looking for her, Anita hurriedly ran towards him. Nathan sighed as soon as he saw his daughter. Tired, he rubbed his eyes and spoke.
“I told you not to get involved with that guy.”
“What are you talking about?”
“It’s fortunate I happened to be in Aberdeen because of a client’s case. Do you know what kind of family the Bennett estate is?”
Anita couldn’t understand Nathan’s chatter. Why was he suddenly talking about the Bennety family’s estate?
“He resembles the Bennett Marquis.”
Suddenly, she remembered Edmund’s words that she had forgotten. Although she hadn’t heard it herself, Edmund had spoken with a familiarity about the Bennett Marquis.
“Are you saying he’s involved with that family?”
“…….”
Nathan didn’t say anything. However, that was enough of an answer.
“So, they were trying to frame me as the perpetrator, claiming I had something to do with that family…”
“It wasn’t you.”
Anita laughed bitterly.
When Detective Russell insisted on implicating Rutger as the perpetrator, she wondered why. It seemed like he had received money from the Bennett estate.
“I told you not to associate with that guy.”
“…….”
“Rather than being helpful in your life, he’s just a troublemaker.”
“Dad, Rutger hasn’t done anything wrong.”
Anita touched her forehead. Why is Rutger’s name even coming up here? Charles Bennett is the one at fault.
“Anyway, from a guy raised in such a messed-up family, I’ve never seen a decent one among them.”
“Dad!”
“He’s just another troublemaker from a dysfunctional household. Beating around the bush, what’s his plan for the future?”
Anita wished she could shut him up, even if it meant giving away her entire fortune.
“Anyhow, don’t tell your mother about this. She’s the type to swim over if she can’t catch a fast boat when she hears news about you.”
Anita agreed with that statement. Among all the things Nathan said today, this was the most sensible.
“I’ll handle this situation myself, so you focus on your studies.”
Anita nodded silently. Then, he handed her an envelope from his bag.
“I need to go for now. I’ve caught a train. I’ll contact you again once things are resolved.”
“Okay.”
Nathan checked his watch and hurriedly left.
Left by herself, Anita opened the envelope he handed her. Inside, there was a bundle of money. Normally, she lived a modest life, valuing frugality as a virtue, so receiving such a large sum of money seemed unnecessary.
Trying to find a pocket to put the money envelope, Anita suddenly remembered that she had used her coat to stem the bleeding for Rutger.
As Anita gave up on finding a place to put the envelope, she turned around. At that moment, she made eye contact with Rutger, who had been leaning against the tree in front of the police station.
“Is it all over?”
He asked, wearing a smiling face despite being undoubtedly aware that he had heard the entire conversation.
Anita couldn’t find the words as she silently watched him approaching. Before she could come up with any plausible excuses or comforting words, Rutger had already come up to her.
“Sorry”
“For what?”
There were many things to apologize for. She felt sorry for his injured hand, and she couldn’t prevent Nathan from making rude remarks. Despite having a partial understanding that he was probably aware of listening to the conversation.
“What’s there to be sorry about?”
However, when Anita looked at the face of Rutger standing right in front of her, she couldn’t come up with a proper response.
It was because she realized that he wasn’t looking for that kind of answer.
“There’s nothing wrong with you here.”
“…….”
“Don’t overthink it.”
He said it as if comforting a child. Instead of responding, Anita just stared at him closely.
In the end, Anita didn’t say anything. Opening her mouth would only lead to an apology.
“Let’s go get your hand treated.”
After a while, Anita spoke up.
“… It’s bothersome.”
“If you leave it untreated, it might get worse. Let’s go quickly.”
