- Chapter 10 - Operation To Recapture Diswen (1) - Part 3
Following Mummy Man, we arrived at a relatively large building near Zerdan’s residence. He placed the eggs on the ground after inspecting the height and distance of the walls.
“This place should be less risky for a surprise attack.”
On the rooftop with him were Anise, who needed to be protected, and myself—three people in total. Anise seemed to be realizing the seriousness of the situation, shrinking a little and looking worried. Though she tried to reassure me with her words, her anxious expression was clear.
“It should be safer than down there.”
Looking down, I saw Obella and Phel waiting below. Terisier was already out of sight, possibly having transformed.
There were no visible guards or anyone keeping watch around the building.
Obella glanced up towards us and gave Mummy Man a slight nod.
“Stay back…”
His deep voice directed us, and I pulled Anise further behind. At the same time, he held the eggs and threw them with all his might outside the building.
Anise’s energy was palpable next to me, suggesting she was using her abilities to assist him.
A loud explosion sounded as the eggs hit the ground, creating a deep crater and sending dust soaring into the air.
From my vantage point, it was hard to believe that such destruction came from just throwing an egg.
Although Mummy Man’s strength was amplified by Anise’s abilities, the sheer scale of the damage was overwhelming.
The building seemed to have been hit with such force that it could have been reduced to rubble.
In hindsight, I should have suggested they throw the eggs directly at Zerdan’s residence.
The members of the organization would have been trapped under the debris before they had a chance to react.
“What’s all this commotion?!”
A man, presumably from the organization, rushed outside upon hearing the noise, his face rigid as he saw the damage. Meanwhile, Obella and Phel strode towards him with confidence.
Despite the apparent surprise, the organization member quickly shouted towards the inside.
“It’s an ambush! A hunter group!”
He extended his arm, and black liquid began to seep from his fingertips.
Phel moved in front of Obella, using her abilities to shield him. The liquid, although ineffective against Phel’s abilities, corroded the ground upon contact, indicating it was a harmful substance.
The ability that seemed dangerous against attackers or ordinary individuals might not pose much threat to Phel, blessed by Anise.
Anise’s powers gradually expanded the protective shield around Phel. Although it wasn’t as abnormally large as during their time at the orphanage, it was sufficient to cover Obella, who was behind her.
Seeing that his ability was ineffective, the man hesitated. Soon, a shadow appeared in front of him, and he smiled brightly.
As expected, Khan emerged from the shadow, wielding a massive axe. His imposing figure and scowling face, combined with the huge weapon he carried, made a formidable impression.
Khan faced Obella and Phel, asking.
“Come to retrieve your comrade? You visit quite boldly. Do you think we’re that easy to handle?”
Shadows spread around Khan, forming a dozen or so new shapes on the ground. These shadows slowly revealed figures, some wielding weapons and others staring blankly with empty eyes. It seemed like some of the distant organization members and Zerdan’s puppets had been summoned.
“Even with that many people suddenly appearing, you won’t stand a chance.”
“We’ll have to see about that.”
Obella retorted.
He raised his hand slightly, and at the same moment, a dry lightning bolt struck right next to Khan.
The figure that fell to the ground showed no sign of movement, indicating that the strike was aimed precisely at one of Khan’s puppets.
Though it was a surprising development, Khan showed no particular reaction, perhaps because he was aware of Obella’s abilities.
“Indeed, we’ll see. But it would be wise not to have high expectations.”
As Khan finished speaking, two men wielding daggers vanished simultaneously.
One appeared behind Obella, lifting his knife high, while the other charged swiftly at Phel’s neck.
“Damn these pests!”
Without Anise’s ability, Obella might have been in danger, but currently, Phel’s powers covered him as well, blocking the knives with his shield.
The attackers took a step back and began slashing at the shield with their blades.
“That won’t make a dent! How dare you mess around here!”
Phel kicked one of the men in the waist, and Obella immediately directed his abilities at Khan. A larger bolt of lightning struck than before, but it seemed to rebound off something, hitting Phel’s shield instead.
Obella’s attack seemed strong, as Phel staggered slightly.
“There aren’t many defensive-type ability users. Besides, there are users whose abilities are much more efficient than just blocking.”
A middle-aged man walked up beside Khan.
A faint mist surrounded them, suggesting that it could block and even repel Obella’s attacks.
“What are you talking about? Defensive-type abilities are quite rare! Aren’t you going to get lost or something?!”
Phel kicked the man aiming at Obella, who was now attacking with his own set of offensive abilities. His basic combat skills, along with his defensive powers, proved to be formidable.
Phel’s gaze shifted to Khan, whose relaxed demeanor was truly villainous. Khan used shadows to position puppets around Phel, all of whom were armed with knives.
Three eggs fell from above, and one of the puppets threw a dagger at them. Though it didn’t seem to pose a significant threat, it was meant to disrupt.
The thrown dagger struck one of the eggs precisely, triggering a large explosion. The other two eggs nearby also exploded, causing a chain reaction of explosions that sent debris flying. The scale of the destruction was massive, blowing away everything but the shielded Obella and Phel.
Khan frowned as his gaze turned toward a high rooftop nearby where a bandaged figure stood.
“Yes, they had that ability too. Deal with it.”
Khan’s knowledge of Obella’s group’s abilities was evident as he issued orders. Some of his subordinates climbed the building walls, while others flew slowly upward with their arms spread like bird wings.
“What do we do?! They’ve spotted us!”
Anise panicked, suggesting we might need to flee.
Mummy Man seemed ready to target the climber with another egg, but I stopped him.
“If you use your ability on the climber, the building might collapse under the strain.”
“But if we don’t act, we’ll be in danger!”
“Calm down, Anise. Obella promised to protect you.”
As shadows loomed over us, a flying man with an eerie grin was laughing.
“Hey, pretty ladies up here? It’d be a shame to kill you right away. How about I play with you first?”
The man spun in mid-air, his grotesque appearance making Anise turn pale.
Just as Mummy Man prepared to launch another egg, something swiftly pierced the man’s neck, causing him to plummet toward Anise.
Anise screamed and ran to my side. The man appeared dead. Glancing down, I saw that the climber had also fallen, motionless on the ground.
Obella’s cold, golden eyes locked onto Khan.
“We can’t afford to lose any more of our allies.”
With that, Obella unleashed a barrage of extremely fast beams of light, piercing through the bodies of Khan’s subordinates and puppets. The speed was so overwhelming that they barely had time to react.
Khan was shielded by the middle-aged man’s mist from the same attack. Despite the protection, the man was sweating profusely, showing that the effort was taking a toll on him.
Due to the backlash from the middle-aged man’s ability, Obella’s attack inadvertently struck Phel’s shield, causing it to wobble violently. Phel, feeling the intense impact, covered her mouth, clearly feeling nauseated.
“Ugh, could you at least consider my situation… Do you think your attack power is weak?”
Phel muttered, clearly on the verge of throwing up, but Obella did not respond.
Obella’s gaze shifted to the rooftop, where he locked eyes with me for a moment. After a brief pause, he turned away with a somewhat relaxed expression.
What was that reaction? Was he relieved to see that I was safe?
His earlier stiff demeanor when we shared a kiss, and his avoidance of conversation, made me think he might be indifferent, but maybe he’s a bit shy.
I smiled at his unexpectedly cute reaction.
Before I end the game, I’ll make sure to have a heated encounter with you, Bella.
