Precautions of a Snakepit - Chapter 86
Without hesitation, Won dragged Target to the chopper. Top Dog and Black Cat hesitantly followed.
“Is this one of us, pretty girl?”
“It says Hospital Helicopter, so maybe it’s for the hospital…”
“It’s ours. I called them earlier.”
“… You mean the call when you said you were going on and then hung up…?”
With Black Cat’s incredulous voice behind her, Won climbed into the helicopter. Once she and Target were fully inside, the two men followed suit. Before they could sit down, the chopper door closed and they were lifted into the air.
Target was seated across from Won and Black Cat let go of Top Dog once he balanced himself.
A man in blue scrubs walked over to Won.
“Are any of you injured?”
“That bastard-looking guy cut his back on something sharp, so I need you to take a look at him.”
“Okay, follow me.”
“Huh? Uh…”
Dragged to the cot, Top Dog lay on his stomach and turned his head to look at Won. She didn’t know what he was looking at, but both Target and Black Cat focused on her as well.
Faced with three pairs of eyes demanding an explanation, Won sighed. She wasn’t much of a talker, and she had a headache thinking about where to begin.
‘I guess I’ll just have to start.’
“First of all, I chose this helicopter because, according to the Air Safety Act, we can’t fly a helicopter without submitting a flight plan in advance. In this area, according to the governor’s executive order, hospital helicopters are an exception and can move without prior reporting or landing permission. Since this place is a hospital, we won’t be suspected, and we might have ended up getting hurt in the process of escaping…”
Three pairs of eyes narrowed. It didn’t sound like what they wanted to know. Won racked her brain for what they might have wanted to know, then continued.
“Oh, if we were going to take the helicopter, it would have been easier to take the fire escape stairs up to the roof, but the reason we broke through the double door is that we don’t know exactly when it would have arrived. If we were in an isolated area, we might have gotten caught before then. If we’re surrounded, there’s nowhere to run from the roof, so I decided that the ground was better…”
She trailed off. It didn’t seem to be the explanation they wanted either. She was hoping they would outright say what they wanted to know, but Black Cat spoke up first.
“I understand that the helicopter is used to transport emergency patients, so how did you get a hold of it?”
“Well, I only said I needed it, but the company took care of it. I’m not sure how, and the cost will be billed to Jin later, so to sum it up, I didn’t do anything.”
“You said you came to rescue me at the request of Mr. Kim, but what exactly happened?”
This time it was Target.
“Well… Mr. Kim searched everywhere for your whereabouts, who suddenly disappeared, and found out you were locked up in this place. He asked the company I work for to get you out, and I was hired because I was the right person for the job, though I didn’t realize it would be on this scale.”
“What the hell is that company…”
Won slowly shook her head and Target fell silent.
At this point, Won was bothered by the quiet one. Top Dog was being tended to by a medic.
She gave him a look that told him to not ask, and he looked her up and down, then turned his head to the other side. Her heart sank for a moment, but she wasn’t embarrassed. Rather, she was puzzled by her own reaction.
‘Why did I do that to him?’
Actually, she thought she knew the answer. The problem is that she didn’t want to admit it.
It was a very disrespectful way to talk to people, and honestly, it hurt her pride. She’s ashamed of herself, no matter how she tries to rationalize it.
Perhaps the environment of the asylum had done irreversible damage to her personality?
Swallowing a sigh, Won looked at Black Cat.
“I’d like to take a look at the material you took from the vault.”
“Ah, here.”
Black Cat pulled out the folder and diary from his torso and handed them over. Won skimmed through the information. As expected, the dossier was about the cult: their members, their sponsors, their goals, and all they have done.
Meanwhile, Black Cat played the video he had taken on the cell phone and looked satisfied.
‘This is good.’
Won asked Black Cat for confirmation.
“Did you email it to yourself or upload it to your personal inbox or something?”
“Yeah, just now.”
“Then give it to me.”
Black Cat obediently handed over the cell phone, not knowing what to say. Won took it, got up from her chair, walked over to the helicopter’s entrance, opened the door, and tossed it outside.
The phone was unattended. It might be tracked, and she needed to deal with it. The helicopter was flying over the ocean. The cell would forever be lost in the great ocean.
Black Cat blinked in surprise at her actions but didn’t question as he understood the situation.
Returning to her seat, she handed the folder over to Target.
“I think you should know, so why don’t you take a look?”
Target stiffened and began to flip through the papers.
Won checked the diary. Unlike the folder, it was very personal. It was Dr. Hudson’s diary.
“This is…”
Target’s eyes lit up as he found something interesting. His chin lifted and he assumed the demeanor of a seasoned businessman. Relaxed, confident, and with a commanding smile to match.
“Thank you, Won. I’ll deal with this case.”
“Of course.”
“Would you like to read it? I’ll make copies of this document so we can share it, and the diary is…”
“Oh, it’s just a diary. There’s nothing in it that would be useful to either you or Gyeom, so there’s no need to copy it. Do you still want to take a look?”
Won closed the diary and asked. Target looked at her for a moment, then gently shook his head.
“Um, no. I won’t look at it if that’s what you think.”
Black Cat’s breathing became more and more ragged as he continued to comb through the papers in the folder in silence. Won and Target pretended not to notice.
Finally, closing the last page, Black Cat turned to Top Dog, his voice slightly softening.
“Rock, would you like to see it?”
“Sure, why not?”
Top Dog’s demeanor was grim. After all the trouble he had gone through to get it, the least he could do was ask for it, but he gave the definition of “not interested” for his reply.
He’s a real bastard. He never moves the way he is supposed to. Won couldn’t help but laugh at this, thinking it was typical.
Silence descended the chopper.
Won shuddered as she looked at the shocked Target and Black Cat. A quick check revealed that the woman with special fibers attached in some places and detached in others, with hair of varying lengths, probably didn’t look too good when she laughed. As she tied her hair up, she turned to the staff.
“Get the remover ready so I can remove the fake hair.”
“Got it, Won.”
Just then, a sharp question came from the direction of the cot.
“What’s the relationship between you two, calling her by her first name, without even a ‘Miss’?”
Top Dog tensed like an animal seeing a human hand for the first time, and his nerves were on edge. However, he was on a mission so he wouldn’t ask in vain. The staff m*mber, who looked puzzled, responded.
“You must have misunderstood. Won is not a name, it’s the number 1. Agent No. 1.”
Won felt three pairs of eyes on her again and slightly shook her head. Of course, the name Lee Won was the fake identity she created for this mission. Who would use their real name on a job like this?
She stared back at the men who felt a sense of betrayal and desolation.
“Then, if it was No.2, it would have been Lee Too, right? My pretty girl has an alias,” Top Dog muttered, breaking the silence.
Won was stunned and craned her neck to glare at him.
‘Would I do that?’
She doesn’t have a good sense when it comes to names, but she isn’t less intelligent.
“We’ll be there in five minutes.”
No one asked where they were going.
The helicopter glided across the night sky.
“The phenomenon you experience… at the nurses’ station.”
Black Cat paused before continuing.
“I guess that the strange scent you inhaled underground was a hallucinogenic substance, and that’s why we saw what we did…”
The added sentence lost steam toward the end.
Black Cat was the only one who had directly seen “it.” The other three experience it with their senses, but not their eyes. Not only visions but also auditory and tactile sensations can be induced by drugs. It wouldn’t be surprising if the sweet scent they smelled in the basement was responsible for everything they experienced as they passed the nurses’ station.
Maybe the lights weren’t flickering like crazy. Maybe it wasn’t the sound of something huge slithering down the hall, or they didn’t hear a snake flicking its tongue. The extreme fear that couldn’t be explained could have been induced by a drug. Some psychotropic medications have fear-inducing side effects.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
Target sighed in agreement.
Finally, the helicopter’s blades stopped spinning. As they landed on the roof of a building, a group of people approached, including the man who had started this whole thing, Kim Sang-Taek.
“Mr. Kim!”
“Mr. Kim.”
“Let me escort you.”
Mr. Kim carefully looked over Target. Target looked back as if it was okay to follow, but Won motioned for them to go first. They would meet again later.
Top Dog and Black Cat also had people waiting. They were part of the same organization as Won.
“They helped me, so be nice.”
Her words made them more cautious. After a brief verification process, they would give them a place to sleep.
“Won, thank you for your service. Are you hurt or is something wrong with-”
“I’m fine. You can go down first.”
After sending the last employee off, Won was left alone on the rooftop, staring up into the night air for a while. She realized something was wrong with her body, despite her earlier answer.
The heat in her body wouldn’t go away.
HERE WE GOOOOO
