Precautions of a Snakepit - Chapter 66
‘Is that really Ms. Yang?’
She was much younger, but she looked like Ms. Yang. Won was under the impression that if you reduced Ms. Yang’s age and breathed some life back into her, she would look like the woman in the portrait.
‘I’d have to get a closer look to be sure…’
The utility room was haphazardly equipped with CCTV. She didn’t want to do anything that might ar*use suspicion.
How could she accomplish her objective without appearing suspicious to the staff watching?
She was thinking to herself, ignoring her surroundings.
“Hey! Are you listening to me?” Nurse Jung bellowed.
‘Aha.’
There was no need for her to try that hard.
Won smirked.
“No, I’m not. I wasn’t listening.”
“What?”
“Nurse, you say some ridiculous things. There is not a room in this ward that doesn’t have CCTV, so how could you have s*x with Rock… and broadcast it to your coworkers in real-time?”
“Well, there’s a way to do that, you just don’t know about it!”
“A method? What is it? Isn’t it just your delusions? Rock doesn’t seem to be particularly interested in you…”
Won looked Nurse Jung up and down.
Agents received training for acting, too. Won wasn’t the best student, but she knew the basics. She gave Nurse Jung a look that her acting teacher had especially taught her, right down to the angle of her eyebrows. It was a look that would make someone’s stomach turn so hard they couldn’t help but want to fight the person giving it.
Nurse Jung raised her hand and puffed out her cheeks. The nurse wasn’t happy with the direction of the conversation, but Won was happy to receive the hit.
‘I control the outcome. You just provide the driving force.’
Won, shaken up, braced herself, and fell in the direction she wanted to go. She might not be good at emotional acting, but she was good at physical acting. She was confident in her ability to do well in Hollywood-style action movies.
Crashing into the shelf, she struggled to regain her balance and casually punched the picture frame, knocking it to the floor, and then fell on top of it. There was a loud shatter, and Nurse Jung froze in belief.
“Ugh.”
Groaning, Won pretended to struggle to her feet and peered at the picture beneath her. When her eyes met it, she was right. It was Ms. Yang.
Ms. Yang had once been a nurse at this mental hospital.
‘Then how did she become a patient and locked in the ward?’
Won wondered if she was working with the hospital at first, but now she wants to expose it to the outside world. If her motivations for the exposure were for revenge.
‘Maybe she developed Alzheimer’s and then the hospital drugged her to keep her quiet…’
“You! You’re putting on a show on purpose. I didn’t even hit you hard and you flew away by yourself! You’re a fraud, aren’t you?”
Nurse Jung asked with an accusatory, but nervous tone.
‘Well, yeah.’
Inwardly agreeing, Won continued to groan to pretend to be in pain.
“This isn’t real!”
Just as she was about to storm out, the door to the utility room opened. At the sight of the third party, Nurse Jung’s face turned pale like she had seen the Grim Reaper.
“Uh, Nurse Park.”
“I thought I told you to do it in moderation, Nurse Jung.”
‘You’ve been watching on the CCTV.’
Won did a good job of refraining from doing anything suspicious.
Won was congratulating herself as Nurse Park scolded her colleague.
“You don’t seem to be able to keep your mouth shut in front of a patient, and you laid your hands on one. I’m not sure you’re qualified to be a nurse at this hospital.”
“Ma’am, I’m sorry. It was a slip of the tongue. I must have been given medication and lied to the patient. Please forgive me, just this once.”
“You don’t need to ask me for forgiveness, you need to ask the patient.”
Even though they were both nurses, the hierarchy was brutally clear. Nurse Park is much higher than Nurse Jung.
A distraught nurse apologized, knowing she’d rather die than do it, but she had no choice.
“I was wrong.”
“Are you okay?” Nurse Park gently asked.
Won had fallen with a bang, but she skillfully avoided a first-aid situation, so she wasn’t actually in pain.
“I’m sore, but I don’t think it is anything major.”
“Just in case, do you mind if I take a look?”
After examining Won’s body, Nurse Park gave her a clerical smile.
“Fortunately, you’re not bleeding or anything that looks bad.”
“Thank you.”
“I apologize again for the mistake as the head nurse. I know it’s a big thing to ask, but if you’ll be so generous as to forgive me this one time, I’ll do my best to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
“Um, okay, but that nurse, Nurse Jung, she said she was having a s*xual relationship with a male patient. I’d like for you to confirm if it is true. It would be against professional ethics for a doctor and patient to be involved in such a way, so if it’s true, shouldn’t the hospital take action?”
“… Don’t worry, I’ll make sure Nurse Jung doesn’t have any more inappropriate ‘delusions.’”
Nurse Park glared at Nurse Jung, emphasizing the word ‘delusions.’ Nurse Jung shivered like a mouse before a cat.
She would have to pay the price for her behavior with Top Dog on the nights when the CCTVs are off. It was bad enough she was sneaking around like that, but since she revealed it to a patient, Won was sure Nurse Park would want to kill her.
‘You won’t be able to talk to Top Dog anymore.’
Won started to pick up the items that had fallen off the shelf, but Nurse Park stopped her.
“We’ll clean it up, so leave it alone. Follow me and I’ll take you back.”
Nurse Park led Won to other staff members and went back to the utility room. Won was grabbed by them and escorted out of the nurses’ station.
The eyes of the patients in the main hall were immediately drawn to her. Their eyes were filled with curiosity as to what she had been charged with to be released so quickly. Among them was Top Dog.
“At this rate, I’ll just look around the stabilization room…”
Top Dog, who was in his signature position on the couch, suddenly stopped talking. Nimbly rising from the couch, he stalked over and touched Won’s cheek.
“Who?”
“What?”
“The assh*le that slapped you.”
Won was a little puzzled. She didn’t think the mark would still be there since she hadn’t been hit that hard.
She could hear the patients stirring. She didn’t want to cause a scene, so she denied Top Dog’s assumption.
“Who slapped me? I bumped into something on the way out, so don’t overthink it.”
“How come it’s only your left cheek then, sweetheart? Like you were standing face to face with someone and got slapped by the right hand?”
Needlessly sharp.
Won signaled for him to stop with her eyes. She deliberately provoked the nurse to hit her out of necessity, so she got what she bargained for. There was no point in making more work for the hospital.
“No, stop it,” Won said through clenched teeth.
Top Dog shrugged and went back to the couch, his reserved seat. He laid down and started talking to himself, loud enough for Won to hear.
“Oh, why do I feel so weak? My whole body is languid and clammy. Am I dying?”
His voice was too loud for someone who was actually sick. One could almost see the arrows rising and falling from his tone. ‘Oh? why?do?I? feel?so?weak??’, which is enough to make anyone who hears it realize that it’s full of pretense.
As Won stood there, unable to even think of leaving her spot, he continued his one-man show with no shame.
“My head is dizzy, my body is shivering, and my back is sweaty. What could possibly be wrong? Suddenly <The Last Leaf> comes to mind, but there are no trees outside our hospital and there are no windows. Am I going to die if something runs out? What if it’s Protector Choi’s hair, which is barely still present?”
Top Dog suddenly pointed his finger at Won, proclaiming loudly.
“If I say, ‘Oh if his hair falls out, I’m going to die!’ I hope that it’s at least my pretty girl who will pull the last strand on Protector Choi’s desolate bald head. Someone who refuses to take care of me because she’s too feisty, but has a warm enough heart to at least pull out the hair one by one on Protector Choi’s head as I sleep. That sounds like you pretty girl, doesn’t it?”
Clutching his chest, Top Dog wistfully coughed.
“That’s why I am okay. Even though I’m sick and you won’t nurse me; even though you’re so cold and do not care for me, it’s okay because at least it’s my pretty girl who pulls out the hair…”
It was clear he wouldn’t shut up until he got his way.
‘I lost.’
She’d rather nurse him a little bit than listen to his endless performance.
Won raised both hands in defeat and walked over to Top Dog.
“What do I have to do to make you stop acting like that?”
His purpose was accomplished and he smirked.
“Lap pillow.”
‘Smug assh*le.’
Won clicked her tongue and moved beside Top Dog.
“Head up.”
He obediently lifted his head, making room for her to sit. She sat down on the couch, warmed by his body heat, and patted her thigh with her hand.
“Put your head down.”
“Do you have to act like this?”
“If you don’t want to do it, then don’t.”
“No way,” he bluntly said, laying his head down.
Won chuckled in disbelief.
