- Chapter 8 - The God of Origins: The Divine Gaze
“Ding!”
“Congratulations, the host has spoken the classic line from Genshin, earning a chance to draw, would you like to activate the draw roulette?”
The system’s voice, resembling heavenly music, resonated in Yang Ming’s mind. Also, he seemingly even alleviates the scorching sensation in the air.
Yang Ming raised his sword to block, resisting the furious blow from Borshemi.
Leveraging the advantages of adulthood and the strength honed from years of life and death struggles, Borshemi’s attack was exceedingly powerful that led Yang Ming’s arms to sink downward.
The force from the blade transmitted through the sword, making Yang Ming’s wrists tingle. It almost caused him to let go of the hilt.
Fortunately, Ace and Sabo arrived in time, engaging Borshemi and giving Yang Ming a moment to catch his breath.
The Bursam Pirates clashed with the four. Their numbers and weaponry gave them the upper hand, putting Yang Ming’s side at a disadvantage.
Taking advantage of a brief pause, Yang Ming glanced at the draw roulette.
The prizes on the roulette were divided into several categories: summon characters, artifacts, items, talents, and skins.
Summon characters: Jean, Diluc, Keli, Wendy, Mona.
Artifacts: Flower of Life, Feather of Death, Sand of Time, Cup of Space, Crown of Wisdom.
Items: Eye of the God, Wind-catching Bottle, Pocket Anchor.
Talents: Swordsmanship of the West Wind, Sword Pressure, Wind of Dandelion, Walking with the Wind.
Skins: Dream of the Sea Breeze, Dazzling Concerto, Shadowy Orchid.
The rewards on the draw roulette were diverse, and Yang Ming noticed that the chances of getting something good were as low as one in ten thousand.
It had to be said that this was a moment that truly tested the determination of a “non-whale.”
Yang Ming dodged sideways, avoiding the attack of a blocking pirate.
At the same moment, the pointer on the draw roulette came to a stop and landing on the “Items” category.
?Eye of the God?: In the world known as the Tivat continent, when people gain the recognition of the gods. They acquire this elemental magical organ, the Eye of the God, which is used to guide elemental power. This contains the power to manipulate the element of fire.
Yang Ming lowered his head and saw a pendant suddenly hanging from his waist, square in shape with a hexagonal ruby in the center, engraved with a flame emblem.
In the Tivat continent, a saying was passed down, “When facing uncontrollable circumstances, people always lament their powerlessness. At life’s steepest turning points, if mortal desires reach the extreme. The gaze of the gods will descend. And the Eye of the God will appear.”
As a scavenger unsure of the destination of objects, when facing the pirate crew’s arson condoned by nobles. There was no doubt that he felt incredibly powerless deep inside.
Yang Ming couldn’t imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t encountered Ace, Sabo, and Luffy. Even if he survived in the uncertain world of scavengers, would he have become a part of the sea of flames as a wronged soul?
The anger towards the darkness and tyranny of this world seemed to attract the attention of a deity from another realm. Through the draw roulette, he was granted this Eye of the God which capable of incinerating all evil.
“Boom! Boom! Boom!”
His heart pounded intensely. Yang Ming could feel the resonance between the burning fury in his heart and the Eye of the God on his waist. The flames that had been recklessly blazing around him were now. And under the guidance of the Eye of the God, adhering to the blade in his hand that formed a sword of flames.
“Die!”
In the face of the stunned and fearful gazes of the pirates blocking his path, Yang Ming advanced calmly.
The flames carried a surging heat wave, sweeping through the pirate’s blades, ruthlessly unleashing its fury upon them.
In an instant, the rudimentary clothing of the pirate turned into the best kindling, and in the grasp of the licking flames, he became a human torch. Even when he rolled on the ground, he couldn’t extinguish the flames consuming his body.
“It was the flames that punished the wicked!”
Yang Ming swung the blade, within the engulfing flames, he resembled a king of fire. The surrounding flames couldn’t harm him in the least; instead, they eagerly gathered around, embracing the arrival of this new king.
At this moment, everyone was dumbfounded.
Ace looked at the figure approaching, surrounded by flames, and a complex expression appeared on his face, as if he longed for something he couldn’t quite grasp.
Sabo’s mouth was open like a koi fish, unable to imagine that the little boy in front of him was the same familiar companion.
“We agreed to have fun together, and yet you secretly put in so much effort behind my back?”
Luffy smacked his lips and mumbled under his breath, “And you said you’re not a Devil Fruit user?”
Seeing Yang Ming steadily approach, flames surrounding him. As the most loyal guards, the Bursam Pirate crew was filled with horror.
The image of their comrade dying a gruesome death in the blaze was fresh in their minds. They simply couldn’t fathom why this boy in front of them possessed such immense power.
The more wicked they were, the more they treasured their lives. Clinging to the allure of the mundane world.
The Bursam Pirate Crew quickly retreated and formed a defensive circular formation.
“You, don’t come any closer!”
Borshemi’s voice quivered, even the arm holding the flintlock pistol trembled.
Yang Ming suddenly raised his head, his pupils reflecting the blazing fires around. He seemingly revealed his inner fury, and his tone strangely calm, “When you recklessly take the lives of others, have you ever thought that your own life could be taken by someone else?”
“Ah!”
An indistinct laugh dropped, the cooldown time for the flash had just ended, and Yang Ming instantly disappeared from the spot.
When he reappeared, he had already landed in the center of the Bursam Pirate crew.
“Turn into ashes!”
Using his feet as a pivot, Yang Ming spun clockwise.
The sword of flames drew the blazing fires around, as if seeking justice for the scavenger who had died unjustly while engulfing all the pirates before him in a sea of fire.
Wailing, mourning, falling sounds, and the cries echoed in their ears.
A foot crushed the charred body to pieces. The young boy held Borshemi’s head, walking out of the sea of flames.
The boy’s bangs fluttered in the hot wind, his pitch-black pupils as bright as stars. His seemingly not-so-tall figure, amidst the backdrop of blazing fires and burning corpses, appeared exceptionally tall.
This scene was deeply imprinted in the memories of Ace, Sabo, and Luffy. Even years later, it would be hard to erase.
When Yang Ming and his party returned to the Dadan family’s place, Garp was still enjoying his leisure time. He is lying on a beach chair in beachwear, holding a book with a provocative cover, and occasionally bursting into laughter with an ambiguous meaning.
“We’re back!”
A childlike voice approached from afar. Garp, who’s fully alert, quickly hid the book behind him.
Garp took off his sunglasses and saw Yang Ming’s group coming out of the woods, covered in dust.
“Huh?”
Garp had keen eyes and quickly noticed the head Yang Ming was carrying, and it was none other than Borshemi, the target of his mission this time.
Although Borshemi’s bounty on the East China Pirates’ wanted list was just a measly two to three million, a small character easily crushed by Garp, he was more than enough to be a whetstone for Yang Ming’s group.
Originally, Garp estimated that even if Yang Ming’s group managed to defeat Borshemi in the end. It would probably take them some effort, at least a week to complete the task.
But Garp never expected that it would take them no more than twelve hours from killing Borshemi at the Nekomata to returning to the Dadan family.
“Could it be that this Borshemi is just a pushover?”
However, when Garp heard the deeds of Yang Ming during the entire hunting process from Ace, Sabo, and Luffy, he immediately overturned his previous speculation.
Seeing the boy standing still, seemingly lost in thought, Garp couldn’t help but exclaim, “Yang Ming, your growth is beyond my imagination.”
Garp still remembered that when he first saw Yang Ming, the latter had just left the Uncertain Object Endpoint. And due to long-term malnutrition, he was as thin as a monkey with nothing but skin and bones, looking miserable.
But after a few months of recuperation and relentless training, Yang Ming not only caught up with the training progress of Ace, Sabo, and Luffy in just a few months, but also surpassed them and gave him a big surprise.
Garp noticed that Yang Ming seemed not to have heard his words but was immersed in his own world, so he asked, “What are you thinking about?”
Yang Ming collected his scattered thoughts and said in a deep voice, “I’ve been thinking for a long time just now. How many scum like Borshemi exist in this world?”
“If no one is willing to stand up for the victims, how many tragedies will occur?”
Garp had learned from Ace and the others about Borshemi’s misdeeds and knew that he was instigated by the upper-class nobles of the Goa Kingdom.
But sometimes, pure brute force alone couldn’t solve problems.
If force could solve all the troubles in the world, with the many top-notch fighters in the Marines and the World Government with the Admirals, they wouldn’t be constantly running around dealing with pirates popping up all over the world.
Garp didn’t want the young man before him who had the potential to become a pillar of the Marines to follow a path similar to his son, Dragon. So he avoided discussing this matter and changed the topic:
“Yang Ming, if you return to the Marine Headquarters with me, you can seek what you consider justice.”
“Justice?”
Yang Ming’s gaze shifted beyond Garp’s tall figure, falling on the Marine cloak hanging on the hanger, swaying in the wind after being cleaned. The word “justice” on it seemed somewhat dazzling.
