One Day My Sister Died - Chapter 3 - Part 1
Chapter 3 Part 1 A Chance That Will Never Come Again
The Marquis of Compani, who had been scrutinizing the pallid face of Yuan, urged him to leave.
Instead of answering, Yuan slowly turned her head toward her aunt.
His crimson-painted lips twitched as if dismissing any possibility.
“Marquis? How could you be so rude!”
“It would have been better if you hadn’t lied from the beginning.”
The Marquis of Compani responded coldly and smiled.
Despite his mouth, which was torn towards his fur-covered ears, his eyes did not waver.
“Didn’t everything finish a year ago—requests, permissions, and all?”
“Still, still, like this…”
“If the claim that there was only one daughter of the late Felice couple had been true, we could have just held a funeral and left. But the situation is different.”
“I can’t take that child!”
A shout like a crackling sound mixed between the Marquis of Compagnie and Countess Felice.
Count Felice eventually left the room.
As he descended the stairs with the support of two attendants, the Marquis of Compani’s gaze also gradually sharpened.
Finally, the uncle, gasping and reaching the first floor, shouted loudly.
Though the shout was directed at the Marquis, the gaze, which seemed like a piercing arrow, was clearly aimed at Yuan.
“That child is my niece! The blood of my brother! She is like my own life!”
“My dear!”
When the Count, who was chubby like a pig, staggered greatly, his wife supported him.
The skinny woman quickly buried herself in her husband’s body.
“The Prince is very angry, Count.”
“I sacrificed my niece, who is like my lifeline! Didn’t the Crown Prince want the ‘daughter of the late Count Felice’? I didn’t send some distant relative’s child! Where exactly did I incur his wrath?”
“Didn’t you say there was only one daughter between the late Count Felice and his wife? And that precious person…”
The Marquis of Compani scanned the chubby Count Felice from top to bottom and then, as if introducing Louise’s coffin, spread his arms and stepped back.
“She passed away so soon. Even if you brought a worthless thing and it died early, it would go to the farm and be questioned. Let alone.”
The Marquis seemed about to yell but looked around and tightly closed his mouth.
However, he approached the nearly collapsing Count Felice and muttered in a very small voice.
“It seems you’re mistaken. The one who is said to be enraged is not Prince Claude.”
The Count’s face, which had been red with anger, turned ashen.
“It is His Highness, the First Prince, Bolonico, who is very angry.”
With the mention of the First Prince, the mansion fell into an eerie silence.
The Marquis of Compani smiled gently again at the terrified Count and Countess.
It was a smile clearly forced.
“The First Prince is very sensitive right now. He is doing his utmost to carry out the task entrusted by the Emperor without a single mistake. How dare a subject leave a blemish? When ordered to present the treasure of Felice, instead of a treasure, you sent a troublesome patient?”
“C-Count Compani, I… I…”
“It’s fortunate. Since I know, just correcting the mistake is enough.”
Count Felice looked up at the Marquis of Compani as if facing the god of death.
The earlier fervor had vanished, and upon hearing about the First Prince, he wiped his damp hands on his wife’s dress and took a breath.
However, not wanting to lose Yuan like this, he gathered his last courage and shouted.
“I will ask the child. She is not just a common maid. I am not such a cruel uncle that I would force a marriage on my niece if she dislikes it!”
“Quite the gentleman.”
The Marquis of Compani snorted and mocked.
All the eyes of the people gathered on the first floor turned to Yuan.
“Your Highness, the Empress Dowager, what shall we do?”
Ignoring the Marquis’s voice, Yuan avoided her uncle’s gaze and looked up at her aunt.
The aunt, upon meeting her eyes, raised her heavily painted eyebrows and shook her head.
Yet, her voice was extremely gentle and kind.
“Yuan. If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to. Don’t you want to live here with me and your cousins just like now?”
This time, she looked at her cousins, who were hiding their fierce demeanor behind her aunt.
As soon as the commotion-makers left the house, their faces seemed eager to grab Yuan’s hair and drag her away as quickly as possible.
Since childhood, Yuan Felice had had only one wish.
A beautiful mansion and a complete family.
And over the past ten years, the wish had gradually diminished in expectation and size, leaving only its essence.
Home. Family.
This mansion, like a living hell, was Yuan’s only home, and those rude people were her only family.
So she thought if she just did well, the situation would improve.
She did her best to help her uncle with his research and maintain the reputation of Felice.
She also didn’t shy away from serving her aunt and cousins, who had become her family on paper.
Because it was what they wanted, she had to stay in the mansion.
Some days, she was in so much pain that she wanted to ask, “Uncle, are we really family?”
Swallowing the words that rose to her throat with pain, Yuan always waited.
She thought if she helped her uncle’s research and cured her sister’s illness, this suffering would end.
She believed that by becoming a true family and being recognized as one in this mansion, she would find happiness.
But then…
