Inlaid With Jade - Chapter 29
Chapter 29
The Wedding
The Lin family originally planned to keep Lin Yu at home for the New Year and set the wedding date after the New Year, but Li Heming couldn’t wait and wanted to get married before the New Year. Before the wedding, the couple could not meet each other, so Old Chen conveyed Li Heming’s idea to discuss the date with Lin Zhengqing and Wang Yueying. Finally, they decided to set the wedding date on the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month. The day when Lin Yu returned to Lin Mansion was New Year’s Eve so she could celebrate the New Year at home.
The wedding date had been fixed, but time was tight. Lin Yu’s wedding dress was half-done before being tossed aside. Now that it has to be reworked, they must find several embroidery workshops to make it separately.
However, the next day, Old Chen unexpectedly delivered Lin Yu’s wedding dress. Embroidered shoes, silk stockings, phoenix crowns, and shawls—everything worn inside out—were also complete.
The Li family has also recently been preparing the mansion to welcome Lin Yu. Old Chen was so busy that he didn’t stay long after delivering the wedding dress. He asked if the wedding dress was to Lin Yu’s liking. After getting a positive answer, he drank tea and left.
After everyone left, Wang Yueying suddenly came to her senses: “Oh, what if it doesn’t fit Qiqi’s body?”
Qin Mei’an smiled and said: “Mom, don’t worry. There are embroiderers at home. Just ask the embroiderer to change it if it is too tight or too long.”
Wang Yueying shook her head and said: “My fault.”
After Lin Yu took a bath at night, Wang Yueying hurriedly urged Lin Yu to try on the wedding dress. To her surprise, every piece fit her body as if it was tailor-made.
Wang Yueying was delighted but puzzled, and she sighed repeatedly: “What a coincidence, how can it fit so well? Even the new clothes made for you every year in the mansion sometimes must be altered to fit properly.”
Qin Mei’an smiled and didn’t say anything. After Wang Yueying left and was busy with other things, she leaned close to Lin Yu’s ear and whispered: “Lord Li is indeed amazing. He even clearly knows the size of your shoulder, neck, and waist.”
Lin Yu heard that she was teasing her but didn’t know how to explain. She had never done anything with Li Heming; at most, they only kissed each other, and she was more puzzled than others about why this wedding dress fit so well. When she thought of Li Heming, she unconsciously thought of the wooden box that Li Heming sent. The broken, dirty stuff was still in the box. She didn’t even know where to throw it. No matter where she threw it, the ground would be filthy.
Finally, Lin Yu had no choice but to load the thing into the betrothal gift and carry it grandiosely back to Li Mansion.
Li Heming never liked to show off, but the wedding procession on the wedding day was so luxurious that it was enviable. The gongs sounded all the way, and the ten-mile dowries spun the capital for half a circle before Lin Yu arrived at the Li Mansion. The unfounded speculations and slanders about the two families in the past disappeared in the festive sound in half of the city.
Lin Yu sat in the carriage with a red veil on her head, so she didn’t know what the scene was like outside. She could only guess how lively it was from the congratulations coming into the carriage. It was her first marriage, and she felt dazed. From the imperial edict to the ceremony, it took less than a month. She felt it was a bit rushed, but every process was in accordance with etiquette, and there was nothing wrong with it. She was still confused even when she entered the bridal chamber. The matchmaker led the way, and Zelan helped her into the room. When she entered the room, she suddenly turned her head and asked Zelan confusedly: “Did I already worshipped in the hall?”
Zelan nodded: “Yes, the phoenix crown on your head was too heavy and you couldn’t stand steadily, so Lord Li helped you. How could you forget it?”
Lin Yu said ‘Oh’ in a daze. She remembered that someone seemed to have caught her wrist, but the veil blocked her vision, so she didn’t notice who it was.
After entering the bridal chamber, one has to pick up the veil and drink the wedding wine. There should be a group of people to make trouble in the bridal chamber. However, Li Heming had few friends, relatives, or brothers, and no one dared to disturb the bridal chamber of the Northern Leader, so after Zelan helped Lin Yu enter the room, the room suddenly became quiet.
Perhaps Old Chen had ordered the matchmaker in advance, so no one followed into the bridal chamber. They left after briefly fussing in the yard and saying a few festive words.
Lin Yu sat on the bed, feeling breathless under the pressure of the golden phoenix crown on her head. She hadn’t eaten anything since morning, and now she was tired and hungry, but she couldn’t move around and had to wait for Li Heming, who was outside greeting the guests, to come and lift her veil.
Zelan picked up a few exquisitely made cakes from the table and brought them to Lin Yu, “Miss, have some snacks to fill your stomach.”
Lin Yu was stunned: “The veil hasn’t been removed yet. Can I eat?”
“I think so,” Zelan picked up a piece of paper from the table and handed it to Lin Yu: “Here is a piece of paper, and it says ‘Eat when you are hungry, no need to wait.'”
Lin Yu took the paper and saw that Li Heming had written it. He indeed liked to communicate through letters.
Lin Yu took the cakes but didn’t take off the veil. She ate a few small bites from under the veil. Just as she filled her stomach, someone pushed open the door. As steady footsteps approached, Lin Yu looked up blankly and saw a blurry figure through the veil, vaguely seeing that it was Li Heming’s.
So bizarre. Although it was unclear, Lin Yu could feel he was looking at her. But she didn’t look dignified enough now; she was wearing a phoenix crown while holding a plate in one hand and a half-eaten cake in the other. Her cheeks were slightly bulging, and she still had a piece in her mouth that she hadn’t swallowed yet.
