Illimitable Until Death - Chapter 22
As Fang Li emerged from the alley and returned to the street, the scene before him had completely changed.
The fiery red hue was expanding.
The thick black smoke was spreading.
The rudimentary houses were collapsing.
Roars and cries were intermingling.
In this moment, the sanctuary known as Aragane Station had transformed into a sea of fire, with each house burning and gradually heading towards destruction.
“It’s like hell…”
Fang Li couldn’t help but mutter these words.
After all, on the street, lifeless bodies lay in every corner, oozing copious amounts of blood, sending shivers down one’s spine.
If this wasn’t hell, then what was?
At this moment, even without activating the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, Fang Li could understand.
The surroundings were filled not with anything else but the concept Fang Li was most familiar with – “Death.”
Just as mentioned before.
“Aragane Station is no more…”
Saying this, Fang Li looked at the lifeless bodies on the ground without any change in expression.
However, it didn’t take long for Fang Li’s gaze to change as he looked at those bodies.
“Ugh… Ahh—!”
Amidst the unpleasant groaning that resembled a baby’s cry, one of the bodies on the ground suddenly began to move.
Like a puppet being manipulated by invisible strings, the body started crawling up from the ground, swaying as it stood, emitting a harsh growl from its throat.
This body not only had turned pale gray all over but also had lost its pupils, leaving only the whites of its eyes.
What stood out the most was naturally the chest of this body.
Because within it, a heart was gradually glowing.
“So, this is Kabane transformation?” Fang Li couldn’t help but be astonished.
Typically, humans attacked by Kabane would die due to massive bleeding.
However, after a certain period of faux death, the hearts of these deceased individuals would start to glow and resurrect, turning into Kabane devoid of reason, only to attack humans.
Even if one miraculously survived being bitten by Kabane, they would suddenly die after a certain time and revive as Kabane.
This period of incubation, known as the Kabane’s Hide period, varied in length due to individual differences but never exceeded three days.
Now, Fang Li was witnessing this scene.
The transformation of the deceased into Kabane.
“Not even death is allowed?”
Fang Li tightened the dagger in his hand, and his eyes flickered with an icy blue light.
However, before Fang Li could act, someone acted first.
“Bang—!”
With a loud gunshot, the chest of the recently transformed Kabane, which was emitting a glow, burst as if struck by an invisible blow, producing dazzling sparks.
“Bang bang bang bang—!”
The next second, several scattered gunshots resounded, each one striking the chest of the Kabane, which had suffered invisible blows, one after another.
Eventually, the chest of the Kabane exploded.
“Bang—!”
Another gunshot, and the heart, unprotected by its membranous covering, was directly shattered, completely losing its luster, reverting the creature known as Kabane back into a lifeless body that fell to the ground.
Fang Li was momentarily stunned, then understood what had happened, turned his head, and looked at the roof of a nearby building.
There, Mumei stood holding two steam guns, slightly dissatisfied, and said to Fang Li, “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and follow me!”
After saying that, Mumei didn’t even wait for Fang Li’s response and started running, leaping and moving on the rooftops of the buildings like an agile cat.
Seeing this, Fang Li couldn’t help but find it somewhat amusing.
“What an unpredictable cat.”
Though he said that, Fang Li still followed along.
The surrounding buildings were slowly collapsing under the burning flames.
Naturally, there were no longer any living people on the streets, only lifeless bodies lying on the ground.
However, amidst the motionless bodies, there were also bodies that could move.
“Ah ah ah ah ah—!”
Amidst the monotonous roaring, one after another Kabane attacked Fang Li along the way, extremely horrifying.
But this time, Fang Li didn’t stop his steps. He treated the Kabane as if they were nothing and ran forward.
After all, those Kabane didn’t require Fang Li’s attention.
“Bang bang bang bang—!”
As the Kabane rushed towards Fang Li one after another, the gunshots echoed distinctly.
Whenever these gunshots rang out, the Kabane that approached Fang Li would collapse as if struck by invisible bullets. Soon, they would be replenished with more shots, one after another, their hearts shattered and completely dead.
From Fang Li’s perspective, Mumei, who moved agilely like a ninja on the rooftops of the buildings, didn’t even look in this direction. Yet, every time, she accurately shot and killed each Kabane on the road, ensuring that there was no longer any threat where Fang Li passed through.
“There is no harm without comparison. Why is the difference so big?”
For Fang Li, killing a Kabane was not a difficult task.
The Kabane’s mode of operation was too simple. They mostly charged straight forward in their attacks. As long as there was a way to breach their heart membrane, an ordinary person would be able to kill a Kabane, not to mention that Fang Li had learned quite a few methods of killing.
However, when the number of Kabane increased, even Fang Li had no way to handle them. It was either to escape or find a clever solution.
But Mumei didn’t need any cleverness.
With her two steam guns in hand and her shockingly accurate marksmanship, killing Kabane was incredibly simple for Mumei.
If they tried to surround Mumei with sheer numbers, it would probably be impossible without several hundred Kabane.
As for Fang Li, if he was surrounded by a dozen or twenty Kabane, it would be pretty much game over.
“Indeed…”
Fang Li didn’t say the rest of his sentence.
Because Fang Li knew that it was still a secret.
Watching Mumei’s figure, which was getting faster and faster, Fang Li took a deep breath and quickened his pace to catch up.
…
At a distance from the direction of the city gate, even in a completely opposite direction, there was a garage.
Inside the garage, an Iron Fortress with a gleaming cold luster was parked, silently waiting to be activated.
When Fang Li and Mumei arrived here, quite a few people had already gathered.
