06. Curiosity Kills the Cat (8)
Translated by: ???????
It was for this reason that this tool was a “One-time use only” and was only a prototype.
The one-time Void Field generator only worked properly in a space that was isolated from the outside world.
She remembered Octavia’s voice urging her to make sure all doors and windows were closed before using it, as any opening in the space would overload the tool and destroy it.
Eve’s ultimate goal was to get her hands on a tool that could track a person’s mana and create a void field around them, or a mana blocker of some sort.
Whether if it was theoretically possible was for Octavia to ponder upon.
Now that she had accumulated this grudge, she was even more desperate for a tool to neutralize Callisto.
‘No, I didn’t mean to work this hard…’
That’s what happened with Alberic, too— She didn’t mean to go that far, but when she saw him get a little excited, with his eyes rolling back in his head, Eve started to become a little mischievous.
To be honest, Eve herself thought it was a bit too much to put the brush inside him, but she was glad she didn’t put her hand in instead.
‘No, it’s Callisto’s fault! How would I know… He had such a talent for eating from his backside… He would even cry and was sensitive to everything when I touched him. It’s all his fault, I didn’t do anything..!’
With that lighthearted excuse, Eve decided that she needed to get out of here, so she shook the hem of her skirt and smoothed out her crumpled clothes.
She also glanced down at Callisto’s body, which was stained over with his bodily fluids.
She seemed to consider her options for a moment, but decided to turn away.
She didn’t want to have to clean him up with her own hands.
She left her room, then quickly went to Alberic’s office.
A servant knocked on the door, announcing her arrival, and the door immediately opened.
After entering Alberic’s office, Eve plopped down on the couch set aside for guests.
Alberic then sighed briefly after seeing Eve’s imperious demeanor. He removed his glasses exasperatedly and placed them on his desk before he gave a signal to his servants and secretary to leave.
“What is it again?”
“A Magician had come to see me.”
“What…”
“He said he saw what happened yesterday.”
Eve’s softly spoken words were followed by a hiss and the violent sound of a chair being shoved backwards.
Alberic jolted up, and his face was a deep shade of blue.
“What, yesterday… How..?!”
“He’s a mage, he must have cast an invisibility spell or something to sneak up behind me, he probably found it weird to see me enter the main building.”
“Ha…”
Without even bringing up the identity of the said magician, he had already realized who it was.
It’s definitely Callisto.
Alberic took a deep breath and raised a shaky hand and cup it over his face.
‘If only Callisto had come to me first, instead of her, I wouldn’t be so nervous.’
Alberic, who had been washing his face dryly, soon returned with a stern, hard expression, as if he had been emotionally drained.
He pushed his glasses up his nose, and asked Eve in a low voice,
“What did he say when he came to see you?”
“He asked me if there was any way that I was forced or coerced to do those sorts of things with my brother.”
“And what did you say?”
“I couldn’t help it, I told him the truth, that it was just a mutually contracted exchange of pleasure. Oh, and that it was unavoidable because Callisto went after us first, so you know I didn’t break any confidentiality clauses, right?”
Alberic was speechless for a long time, and Eve could feel the gears spinning in his head. He was trying to figure out how to shut Callisto up.
Eve sat down with her legs crossed.
“Are you scared?”
“Are you really saying that now?”
Eve burst out into a small giggle after hearing his Sensitive words.
Eve buried her back deep into the couch’s backrest, then called out Alberic.
“Crawl over here and I’ll give you something nice.”
“Damn it, are you out of your mind?”
“Shouldn’t you have at least one of his weaknesses?”
Alberic pursed his lip. He can’t believe Eve was literally doing this right now.
She’s actually in the mood to toy with him in this kind of situation, but on the other hand, the virtue of having to do her bidding in a non-closed room made his heart flutter a little.
The fear of being seen by someone and the feeling of humiliation after being forced to crawl on all fours like an animal choked the life out of him, but he eventually lowered himself to his knees.
He was already out of his mind anyway.
Alberic hesitantly but steadily crawled to all fours and knelt at his feet.
Eve stroked the man’s hair, then moved her hand down to caress his slender cheeks and jawline.
Alberic flinched at the gentle touch, he then meekly offered his face to Eve, who was breaking down everything little by little.
“It’s not something you can use to reveal somewhere, but you can use this to blackmail… Well, I mean, make a deal with him. You might want to suggest the use of a ‘Magician’s Oath‘.”
Eve said, after taking out a video sphere from her pocket.
She then placed it on the table and activated the play button.
A holographic image appeared through the small hole in the sphere immediately.
Alberic sat at Eve’s feet and watched with some trepidation as the purple-eyed man hovered over the stone, his face distorted with tears and spewing out vulgar words that were nothing short of lewd.
He had never seen Callisto in his true form, but he could recognize this man was definitely Callisto.
He was disheveled, gasping for air, and crying, Callisto’s face was certainly not something they can display publicly.
“I see, and he’ll kill me no matter what if I ever tell anyone about it.”
“You two are in the same boat, aren’t you, and it would reflect badly on you.”
“… That’s right.”
“Ask him if he plans to stab you in the back for coming her to help you but he layed his hands on your little cousin instead.”
“From the looks of it, it looks like it was you who laid your hands on him.”
“Ahaha, well… You’ll have to figure out how to use it yourself. After all he was a man who only lived with magic books up his nose.”
Eve tapped Alberic’s cheek with her fingertips a couple of times, then stood up. Alberic followed her to his feet.
Just as they were about to walk out the door, Eve spoke again, as if she had forgotten something.
“Oh, that’s right. There’s a naked man lying obscenely in my room right now.”
“Ha…”
“Take care of the mess, though I’m afraid he won’t be able to get up for a while.”
“Why did you even do this… Without any countermeasures… If that’s the case, you could have at least given me a heads up first, not surprise me like this.”
“I don’t see why I have to make excuses for you, I’m just doing what I want to do, and it’s not like I broke the terms of our contract by f–cking a magician, right?”
“A Magician? Seriously, don’t pretend you don’t know. Do you think you can get away with having an archmage as an enemy? Didn’t it ever occur to you that your reckless behavior might affect the entire family? What do you plan to do if your plan failed?”
“If it fails, well, at best I’ll die.”
‘He nags too much… If I’m going to die, I’m going to die, and if he gets caught up in it, so be it, it’s none of my business, isn’t it?’
Eve lifted, the corners of her mouth and smiled.
Alberic felt a creepy emptiness in her smile for a moment. It was as if she was simply an animated body without a soul.
“Anyway, I apologize for being so assertive. Don’t worry, in the future, I’ll try to keep my brother in the loop whenever possible.”
“… Please, please.”
I was ninety-nine percent sure that I could defeat Callisto, because I’d seen it in the game.
But Alberic was right.
I had to keep in mind that the game could go in a different direction.
One of the reasons I was so blindsided by the game was that even though I had decided to live as Eve, I subconsciously think that that this was just a game.
After humbly accepting the fact that she hadn’t really thought about what to do after the hunt was over, she then thought, ‘I’ll just have to make the best out of it.’
Then I’ll leave it for Alberic to do the cleanup.
“I’ll do better in the future.”
The best way possible for Eve, was for the two men who had learned each other’s secrets, to leave her aside, ignore her, and fight against each other.
Their relationship, their patrons, their politics, none of that mattered to Eve— All that mattered was that she kept these men’s red flags away from her, in the game.
‘That bastard Callisto must be serving a royalty if he’s even addressing me with the title “Boon,” but given the setting of Callisto, it’s definitely not the Emperor and the second prince, so I’m guessing it’s the crown prince he’s serving. I thought there might be a duke in there, but I don’t really know, all I know is that, there’s always a big shot behind it.’
Then it would probably become an imperial succession battle, with Alberic in the middle of it.
Eve clicked her tongue.
‘You’ve caught a rotten rope in your hands. That crown prince didn’t have the best ending.’
Eve racked her brains off, searching through her memories. But none of the routes had an ending with the crown prince on the throne.
She’s not sure about what happened in the Hidden Ending, because it doesn’t say how he ended up, but in every other ending, the man falls to his death… At the hands of his own brother.
‘This game is going to be a waste.’
Even if she takes the route of accepting the Crown Prince’s heart, Eve still ends up being decapitated.
After all everyone who was associated with the crown prince, were considered his accomplices.
‘It’s a good thing I got decapitated along with the crown prince. Alberic, you bastard, all that nagging about the family name, blah, blah, blah, and you’re holding on to the wrong rope for dear life. Stupid asshole.’
As she walked out of the office, she was deep in thought, so before she knew it, she was already out of the building.
Eve walked back to the annex, her steps were light in the cool night air.
It was in the next morning when Callisto burst into Alberic’s bedroom.
The man who barged into the room, and grabbed him by the throat while he was rolling over in his sleep, was the same man with the lewd purple eyes he’d seen in the video.
“I’ll kill you, both of you, and that damned girl!”
“Calm down, Mr. Callisto.”
“Calm down? Cut the bullshit, you disgusting human beings!”
“I don’t know what your problem is, but…”
Several servants had already gathered in the wide-open bedroom with worried faces as Callisto shouted at the top of his lungs.
They were unable to intervene in the argument between the two men, after all, the other man was supposed to be an honored guest. So they simply waited at the door for their master’s orders.
Alberic glanced over Callisto’s shoulder, stared at them, then lowered his voice to a whisper.
“There are so many eyes on us, let’s move out first.”
Callisto bit his lip after hearing his words. It was already bruised after he bit it so many times last night.
A little time passed, and the two men moved into the parlor that connected to Alberic’s bedroom.
Both men were in a mess. Alberic settled himself into the parlor. He was only wearing a robe over his pajamas, and with a long sigh he asked the waiting servants to set a simple tea table.
Callisto’s condition was far from normal.
He was dressed in a light linen shirt and cotton trousers, thankfully tailored to his size, but his eyes were red and slightly puffy, and his lips were swollen from a cut.
He looked as if something had happened to him yesterday, and he’d woken up, thrown on some clothes, and went to Alberic’s bedroom without so much as a glance at the mirror.
