15. Night of the Hunt (2)
Translated by: ???
“Well, even a grown lady can get hurt while attending a hunting event. They’re all too overprotective, even though we’re not children anymore.”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying! They’re all too much.”
Eve responded with an exaggerated tone, as if she were acting, and Katarina, with some sincerity, nodded in agreement. As they bantered and laughed together, Eve kept a close eye on the situation outside the lounge and then asked in a quieter voice.
“That day, did you feel that something was a bit strange?”
Katarina, who was applying lip balm, turned her body slightly to face Eve directly. They both knew that the conversation that was about to come was real.
Katarina hesitated for a moment, but eventually pressed her lips together and slowly spoke.
“Everyone was so agitated that day that I couldn’t bring it up.”
“I see.”
“Somehow, it didn’t seem like they were trying to hurt anyone.”
Eve’s eyes narrowed. Katarina’s guess was exactly what she had felt. Eve nodded her head slowly a few times and spoke.
“For now, the investigation is still ongoing. Since we still don’t know the exact purpose of the assailants, I would advise you to be careful for a while, Lady Katarina.”
“Please take care of yourself as well, Lady Evelyn.”
Then Katarina hesitantly added in a small voice.
“But, there’s a rumor that I heard…”
“What rumor?”
“Well, it’s about the political conflict that’s been intensifying. I wonder if it’s related to that…”
Katarina trailed off without finishing her sentence as Eve held up a hand, signaling her to stop. It was too risky to talk about such a topic outside.
Katarina nodded her head and closed her mouth.
“Well, once the investigation progresses, the truth will come out soon. By the way, I’ve noticed that lately, my older brother has been visiting the palace more frequently. It’s a bit worrying, considering it shouldn’t be anything serious.”
“I see. My older brother has also been visiting the palace more often lately. I’m really okay, but I’m afraid it might make me look like the overly protected youngest daughter in the eyes of others.”
“It’s his precious little sister’s business, so he has to step up and take action.”
“Furthermore, they found the body of one of the werebeasts at the scene. It seems like they already have a rough idea of who the culprit might be.”
“I heard it was a werewolf. It seems that the investigation is being conducted throughout the area where werebeasts live. The authorities seem to be conducting a thorough search, so hopefully, the investigation will wrap up soon.”
“They need to find the culprits as soon as possible. It’s frightening to go out knowing they’re there.”
The two of them followed up with a few choice words and eye contact, thanking each other for sharing the information they needed.
After a little more small talk, Katarina finished her makeup and left the lounge first. Eve sat at the vanity table in the corner of the lounge, resting her chin on her hand and lost in thought.
“Someone has already made contact with the young duke. It seems like someone is trying to play politics. The question is, which side?”
As she was lost in thought, she felt a vibration in her thigh. It was the communication device that she had shared with William obtained through Octavia. It was buzzing to indicate that there was a message.
Eve rummaged through her dress pocket and took out the communication device, pressing the button.
“Hello.”
As Eve listened to the voice that came out of the communication device, her face gradually became colder. The matter was brief and didn’t take long.
“…I think I need to deal with those bastards once and for all. No, I’ll do it alone. Alright, I got it. I’ll contact you again.”
Eve replied in a cold tone and then pressed the button again to end the communication. She stood up abruptly, biting her lip tightly.
“Nothing at all? That’s ridiculous.”
The garden party wasn’t the problem. Where does this route lead and how far will it deviate? The story was gradually sinking into a quagmire.

After taking a light shower right after returning from the party, Eve changed into her casual clothes. Seeing Eve looking for her pants, the people in the mansion guessed that she was heading east towards the river, as she often did.
When Eve returned from her errand with a stern look on her face and a sudden insistence on returning home, Alberic, who had returned to the mansion early with her in a somewhat surprised state, realized that something was amiss. He caught up with her and grabbed her as she pressed her hat to her head, wearing only a light vest over her shirt.
“Where are you going?”
“I’ll explain when I come back.”
“What are you planning to do… with that knife?”
Alberic looked at the machete with a scabbard of dried leather that Eve had in her hand, instead of the longsword she always carried with her. He wasn’t well-versed in weapons, but he knew that the knife was not the type of weapon that knights used.
“Who do you need to meet?”
“Don’t worry about it. I’m a bit busy now, so I’ll tell you when I come back.”
Caught off guard by Eve’s stern and somewhat murderous look, Alberic involuntarily released his grip and took a step back. Although Alberic had seen quite a bit of Eve’s attitude, he had never seen her so angry before.
Despite the fact that her anger was not directed at him, for a moment, the man’s face was filled with terror.
“…Be careful.”
Alberic barely managed to open his mouth with difficulty, feeling his skin tingle at the sharpness in Eve’s aura. Eve looked at the man’s pale face with emotionless, cold eyes and left the mansion without a word.
After crossing the river by carriage, Eve changed to another carriage on the east side of the river. Unlike the well-organized streets and buildings in the western part of the city, the eastern part was tangled like a spider web due to the buildings that were erected without any plan. She couldn’t rely on the carriage drivers who mainly traveled in the western part of the city to guide her on the roads in the east.
Eve looked out the window of the small carriage and reminisced. Unlike the main street where the workshops were organized, a few blocks away, there were inns, pubs, and small coffee houses in a congested area where outsiders were likely to get lost. Even Eve was not familiar with the roads outside the area she frequently traveled.
After getting off the carriage, Eve wandered around, trying to remember and finally managed to find a familiar sign.
However, unlike the pub in her memory, all the windows on the upper floor of the inn building were dark, and two burly men were guarding the entrance of the pub.
“Move.”
Eve’s short command made the two rough-looking men briefly meet each other’s eyes before stepping aside a few steps from the entrance. Eve passed them by and opened the door to enter.
The pub was filled with menacing-looking men. Everything was set up perfectly, as if they had already known she was coming.
Moreover, the table in the center of them was empty like a stage deliberately prepared. She didn’t have to think hard to know that it was reserved for her.
With sharp fangs bared and a smile like a beast’s howl, Eve, without tension, continued to walk slowly while whistling. The song that flowed from her slightly pursed lips was ?Imperial March?1The Imperial March is a musical theme present in the Star Wars movie franchise. It is also known as “Darth Vader’s Theme” and is often associated with the Galactic Empire and the character of Darth Vader. The music was composed by John Williams and first appeared in the movie “The Empire Strikes Back.” It has since become one of the most recognizable and iconic musical themes in film history., which announced the arrival of Darth Vader.
Of course, no one in the room understood the meaning of the song.
“The service here is terrible. Shouldn’t they at least bring some beer?”
Eve, who sat in front of the old wooden table and rested her chin on her hand, muttered to herself in a leisurely voice. She had looked around briefly upon approaching the table, but Sidus, the young leader, seemed to be absent from this place.
“Oh, I really liked the beer in this place.”
Eve licked her lips and slowly took out a studded half-gloves with a steel plate embedded in it, putting it on both hands. As if it were a signal, the pub’s werebeasts quietly took out their weapons from their waists.
“Shall we start? It’s been a while since I hunted dogs.”
“Ha, miss. Just because you’ve got a big mouth doesn’t mean you can say anything.”
“Don’t kill her. The boss has a use for her.”
“Why do we have to bother to catch a young girl?”
Beasts with fur and human ears and beasts with animal ears laughed and chattered. There were about thirty of them. There were roughly fewer than thirty of them, which seemed like child’s play to Eve.
The night of the hunt was approaching.
Due to her premonition that it would turn into a melee, Eve brought a machete instead of a longsword today.
The machete, nicknamed ?Jungle Knife?, often carried by exploratory teams venturing into the wilderness to cut through branches and tough vines, was a tool forged from strong iron, known for its remarkable strength and resilience. Of course, it goes without saying that it was also a suitable weapon for cutting flesh and bones.
Eve stood up, her back to the table, and spun the heavy, reddish-brown machete once in her hand. It was much larger and longer than a dagger, but the way it was used was somewhat similar.
The machete was more like a weapon for stabbing and crushing than for cutting. A heavy sword, capable of slicing through wood harder than human bone with little finesse but sheer force, glinted in Eve’s grip. It was the perfect weapon for hunting dogs.
“Come on, you shitty dogs.”
The words that came out of the mouth of the young woman, barely an adult, who had gathered her milk tea-colored hair into a tight bun, were unbelievably provocative. At her provocation, everyone in the pub growled and began to howl menacingly in response.
