13. The Hunting Event in May (3)
Translated by: ???????
Eve drained the black tea from her cup with a sip and continu
ed her lighthearted conversation.
It was a dull hour, but she saw no reason to grumble.
“I understand Lady Evelyn seems to prefer hunting deeper into the woods with the gentlemen. Will you be participating in the hunt yourself today?”
“Ah, yes. It was a humble talent, but thanks to my brother who thought well of me, I have been allowed to hunt with him.”
“Oh, that’s great!”
And at that moment, a voice broke in from not too far away in the crowd.
It was a voice that seemed to have a bit of an edge to it.
“I suppose the wild hound that the young count brought in will be doing their part right?”
“You have quite a good eye, I heard from the young count that she was a half-breed. Although it’s quite embarrassing to show off, they’ll be good enough for a house dog.”
“Ho-ho. She’s worth her weight in gold, but we’ll have to be careful with feral dogs, as they never know when they show their teeth.”
Everyone must have heard the voice because the response of the young lady, Eve was talking to dropped for half a beat.
Eve shook her head inwardly at the thoughtlessness of the open insult.
‘Still, it’s a long way from what ‘Eve’ has been called in the game. In the game, she was treated like a whore who’d been lucky enough to walk into a nobleman’s house, eat their food, and act like one of them…’
Eve didn’t follow any of the options given to her in the game.
She didn’t throw her tea in anger, she didn’t sneer and hurl insults back at them, nor did she go silent in frustration.
“Oh my God.”
A smoldering exclamation escaped Eve’s mouth, and the teaspoon she held snapped the now-empty teacup and saucer in half as neatly as if it were a pudding.
The ladies were momentarily at a loss for words as they witnessed Eve’s amazing prowess swinging before their eyes.
“I’ve only been manifesting my aura for a short time, so I’m not very good at controlling my power. I apologize for causing such an unsightly scene, and I hope you ladies will forgive me.”
The faint cluster of golden light that had surrounded the spoon diminished.
Eve then summoned a servant to remove the teacup and saucer which broke exactly in half without spilling a single shard, with a nonchalant attitude.
The insults that had been fired at her, for reasons that are unclear, were quickly put down in a blatant show of force.
Eve smiled affectionately at the maid who brought her a new teacup, with a stiff expression as if she had been frightened.
?
“Didn’t I tell you to watch your conduct?”
“Has word gotten around already?”
“Exactly three minutes after you split the teacup, the news reached the gentlemen’s area. What other lady but you could split a teacup in two? I could hardly look up in embarrassment.”
“No, they called me a wild hound and a half-breed first, so why are you scolding me for breaking one of their cups.”
“I know. If you slapped one of those delicate ladies on the cheek, they’d have had their jaws knocked out, yes, very well done you did better.”
“Brother, you’re just cursing me.”
The two people bickered as they sat atop the horses provided by the imperial court for guests at hunting parties.
There had to be some flimsy excuse for fairness, but Eve quickly realized that the host was just trying to brag about how lavishly he was spending his money.
Alberic rode atop his docile brown stallion, while keeping a certain distance between him and Eve, and shot her a dubious look.
“Don’t you think you could have just handled it with a simple conversation?”
“It’s a pain in the ass, why bother using your mouth when your fists are closer?”
“It’ll only add to the rumors about you that you’re ignorant, violent, and impulsive, and will only add to the Count’s worries of not being able to wed you off if this keeps happening.”
“Haha, this is how you spin your confession that you want to spend the rest of your life with me?”
“Let’s not talk….”
When Alberic, who had been mingling with the gentlemen and not socializing for a long time after the ceremony, slipped away from the herd in the hope of catching a deer, the two had been riding around on horseback over the rolling hills in a leisurely manner which made one wonder if they had any intention of hunting anything at all.
“Now you’ve got to come clean.”
“What do you mean?”
“Who are you looking for so hard, is there someone you’re going to meet?”
“I’m looking for a deer, not people.”
Alberic retorted with an air of impudence, he pulled on the reins to change the direction the horse’s head was facing.
Eve, who had been staring at the bridle in his other hand, lowered her voice and whispered sweetly in a languid tone.
“You don’t seem to have much interest in finding the deer, so why don’t we just hunt it and beat the crap out of it and have some fun in the back of the oak grove over there, it’s out there and I don’t think anyone will come.”
“Are you crazy?”
“If you put a gag in your mouth, crawl on all fours, and imitate a horse, I’ll whip you across the back, how’s that sound?”
“That’s an offer not even worth considering.”
Alberic’s cheeks flushed red and he turned his head so that he could whimper, and Eve gave a small chuckle at the way his cheeks rose with excitement, despite the sarcasm in his voice.
“I was joking, but you’re reacting pretty strongly.”
“I hope you watch that mouth of yours outside.”
Alberic narrowed his eyes and glared at Eve, but she just shrugged and laughed, unperturbed by the harsh reaction.
It was then that Eve sensed the presence of people who were coming from the opposite direction and shut her mouth.
It wasn’t long before they came face to face with a pale maiden, who had her legs gathered on each side of the saddle.
She was traveling slowly with her knight escort, who was leading the way.
The Lady, dressed in a dark navy blue two-piece dress and carrying a brown, long-barreled rifle-type shotgun, slowed to a stop as she spotted the pair approaching from the opposite direction.
She inclined her head slightly to speak to her escort, who was holding the reins of her horse.
The parties on both sides slowly slowed to a halt and stood some distance apart.
Alberic had a sneaky expression, as if he already knew who she was.
The girl on horseback smiled at them both, and Alberic tipped his hat in greeting.
It was the lady who spoke first.
“May I ask you to introduce yourself, gentleman?”
“I am Alberic Vermell. It is an honor to meet you, My Lady.”
“Alas, you must be the Young Count of Vermell.”
“I would be honored if you would call me Baron Holland.”
“I am honored to meet you, Baron Holland, and the lady is…?”
Evelyn, who had been holding her breath and watching the polite conversation between the two, which seemed to have been lifted straight out of an etiquette manual, felt her gaze fall on her and opened her mouth to speak.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, I’m Evelyn Vermell.”
“Aha…. Nice to meet you, young lady. I’m Katarina Valqueres.”
The woman who introduced herself as Katarina, is a young woman with bright reddish-blonde hair in a tight bun.
She had a glint flashing in front of her eyes after hearing Eve say her name.
The existence of a lady named Evelyn Vermell was a fairly popular topic of conversation among the young ladies these days, so it was impossible for Katarina not to know about her.
“I’ve heard you can use an aura, and it’s quite something.”
Katarina, who was familiar with the rumors of the cross-dressing Young Countess of Vermell, with her soft grayish-brown hair, did not hide her curiosity.
Eve simply smiled back, after she was unable to detect any unpleasant emotions such as disdain or contempt in the smiling face of Katarina, who appeared to be only a few years younger than her. She then directly addressed the rumors,
“It’s nothing more than a trick. The depth of my training is still so shallow that I’m embarrassed to show it.”
“My God, you don’t know that there are only twenty or so aura masters in the entire continent, and I’ve heard that aura sensing alone is impossible without bone-crushing training. A minor trick, you’re being too modest…!”
Eve’s humble remarks were met with excitement on Katarina’s part.
Judging from the way she was sitting on her horse, while holding a loaded hunting rifle, it seemed that she was not only interested in guns and hunting, but also in swordsmanship.
Eve smirked and sneaked a glance at Alberic.
The man had slipped off to one side to allow the two to talk quietly, as if he had no intention of moving anywhere.
Eve tore her gaze away and focused on Katarina, Alberic’s demeanor seemed to somehow encourage her to make small talk with this young woman.
‘What is it? Aren’t the Valqueres part of the neutral faction?’
Of course, Eve had never seen such a lovely-looking seventeen-year-old in-game before, with her luscious reddish-blonde hair ironed into a bun that hung down her back so she went along.
