11. The Rawest Mind (2)
Translated by: ???
One by one, the long table began to fill with plates and glasses. Eve’s face lit up with a smile as the plates were set out, beautifully plated with delectable cheeses, slices of cured and dried pork hind leg, and bite-sized pieces of fruit.
Alberic and Castel watched in silence as the table was filled, but when the servants brought in more than four bottles of wine, their faces began to stiffen.
Alberic remained patiently silent, his back straight as he studied the table, and only after the servants had finished setting the table and all but Joseph had bustled away, did he turn to Eve.
“Are you going to kill yourself with alcohol? Why don’t you just jump off the roof of the mansion?”
“How can I kill myself with liquor, I won’t die if I drink like this, you exaggerate.”
“My lady. I think it’s a bit much, but…….”
“You sound weak. I know because I’ve done it, and it goes in somehow. Joseph, pour me a glass of white wine first.”
They were the most agreeable drinks Eve had found in all her travels through the capital. Eve gazed in ecstasy at the light golden liquid that filled her glass and with a clink, demanded a toast.
‘Unfortunately, we don’t have a culture of raising toasts like ‘Cheers!’ here… but we can at least say ‘Cheers’, right?’
“Come on, everyone, drink up. Raise a glass to me for solving the case in style.”
The men raised their glasses, one reluctantly and one with relative nonchalance.
That was as far as she could recall without much difficulty. Eve began to stumble over the events that had transpired since she had begun to wash down her stomach with alcohol.
“Yes……. And then we had that toast……. and then I fucking ran……. I sent Joseph out and drank myself to death, and then Alberic passed out first……?’
Alberic thought he could keep up with her for a while, but eventually, he got drunk and fell asleep with his head on the table. There was no way to tell if he was asleep or passed out.
Eve glanced over at his body as it slumped forward with a thud, then clicked her tongue and gulped down the bourbon, which glistened a deep amber color, but her eyes were also faintly open.
“Well, that wimp……. said he’d last a long time.”
Eve’s face remained outwardly unchanged as she sipped at the whiskey in the glass without ice. Castel, looking at her blank face, spoke in a voice even lower than usual, barely above a whisper.
“Eve. There’s something I’ve been wondering about for a while.”
“Yes, tell me.”
“It seems to me that your attitude toward Alberic…… is not typical of a distant cousin.”
“Does it seem that way?”
“How is it possible to develop such a close bond in such a short time?”
“Huh?”
Eve’s expression crumpled as she realized he was expecting her to answer what their relationship is. Eve was so dumbfounded that she almost asked if what she sees is an illusion or not. Castel’s face was as impassive and cold as ever when he turned quickly to look at her.
“You two seem so close, I envy you. I have a younger brother a little older than you…….”
Although the words that came out of his mouth were anything but.
Eve realized he was drunk as she looked at Castel, who was gibbering away with a stony face devoid of emotion. She’d filled his glass without pacing him, thinking he was good enough to drink what she gave him, but he’d ended up drunk.
‘Even Swordmasters get drunk when they drink this much,’ she thought, ‘then it’s true they can get poisoned or die of blood loss if they get stabbed?’
Of course, she had heard that there were ways to use auras to get sober, but she had assured him throughout the drink that he should never do such a wasteful thing, so he drank it honestly without trying to cheat. Of course, Castel was technically the hardest drinker of the three, but Eve hadn’t thought she’d ever actually see the Swordmaster drunk.
Eve put her chin on her hand, her face still calm as she watched the man ramble on about his distance from his half-brother, and then poured the last of the whiskey into his empty glass.
As soon as the glass was filled with the amber liquid, Castel closed his mouth, maintained a stoic expression, looked down at the whiskey, and downed it in one swift gulp. It was a brisk one-shot. Eve smirked and asked.
“So, what about your brother?”
“……Yes, ah, my brother.”
Castel’s eyelids slowly closed and opened. Hearing Eve’s voice, he was about to continue, but suddenly paused, pursing his lips, then turned to Eve and asked,
“Did you know that …… I have a brother?”
“Oh my…….”
With that answer, the silence at the table reached a breaking point. Eve rose from her seat and called for the servant who was waiting outside the dining room. Several of the servants who entered the dining room at her summons could be seen exchanging glances among themselves, but Eve pretended not to see them and ordered the tables cleared and the two drunken men disposed of.
Alberic was carried to his chambers on the back of a tall male servant. The problem was Castel.
“It’s all right. Don’t bother.”
“No, I mean…… you’re drunk and need to go home?”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re a mess.”
He was so messed up that he couldn’t talk with a straight face. It would have been easier to deal with if he’d just passed out as Alberic had, but the manor’s servants were huddled around him, fidgeting, not daring to lay a hand on a knight’s body.
Eve looked troubled, then suddenly slapped Castel’s cheek so hard it made a loud sound.
The servants were surprised by her sudden behavior. Eve smirked at them, extended a finger, and held it to the corner of her mouth to gesture for silence, then grabbed Castel’s chin, whose eyes were slightly refocused from the slap, and lifted him up. Already, Eve’s condition was far from normal. Eve, who had done what she could not have done in her right mind with her drunkenness, spoke in a gentle voice.
“Sir Castel. Are you all right?”
“Ah, my lady. I’m fine.”
“Are you able to stand?”
“Yes.”
