11. The Rawest Mind (1)
Translated by: ???
Eve looked at the man kneeling at her feet, looking up at her, and tried to remember how things had gotten to this point. It was a bit foggy from all the alcohol she’d poured into her stomach, but she was soon able to recall the events that led up to it.
Eve made plans to dine with Castel to celebrate the successful conclusion of the case. Though he would never inherit the Marquisate, the man who had been raised in a noble family for well over twenty years, and who had been well educated, escorted her to dinner at a fine restaurant.
The meal was exquisite, beginning with a salad with tangy homemade cheese and freshly baked white bread, followed by a spicy seafood stew with seafood not often found in the capital, scallops baked in butter, herbs, and salt seasoned with wine and butter and skillfully grilled to a reddish crust on the inside, and sirloin steaks lined up to fill the table. There wasn’t a dish left out.
And the garnishes, mashed potatoes with butter and white asparagus steamed in white wine were so delicious that she completely forgot about the aristocratic table etiquette of leaving the garnishes untouched whenever possible. To be honest, Eve was so focused on the food and drink that she doesn’t even remember what she and Castell were talking about during the meal.
After the plates had been passed around a half-dozen times, Eve broke the thin caramelized layer of the dessert crème brûlée with a dessert spoon and scooped it up with the vanilla bean-infused custard pudding underneath, making a mental note to remember the name of the restaurant for another time.
After finishing their meal, they walked back to the Vermell mansion together. It was Eve who caught up with Castel, who had perfected the final escort. It was an old habit of hers to cleanse her stomach with alcohol after finishing a big project, and she never drank alone.
Eve’s pleas for just one drink and her crude threats had left him a little flustered, but he‘d followed her hand into the mansion.
Despite the unexpected and untimely arrival, the servants of the manor were not ungracious. When Eve reported that she had gone out for a quick bite to eat and had returned, dragging Castel with her, and had taken the man straight to the dining room, Alberic came downstairs in his tailored waistcoat to join them, and the three of them sat down to drink.
“Is brother going to have a drink, too?”
“…… No. You’re not going to listen to anything I say now.”
Alberic saw the look on Eve’s face and was about to launch into a tirade about etiquette and manners, but then he sighed and shook his head. Then he looked away and apologized politely to Castel. Somehow, it felt worse than being told off in person.
“This is perfect timing. Could you please attend to the guests for a moment, older brother? I’ll go and check if what I requested has arrived correctly.”
Humming a tune, Eve left the two of them alone and slipped out of the dining hall. Of course, the whole point of the escape was to make amends. Up to her room, Eve shed her coat, vest, shirt, and pants like a snake shedding its skin, tossing them all to the floor, then opening her closet herself, she pulled out a pair of lightweight beige silk chemise.
Anna, who had been waiting in Eve’s room since hearing of her arrival, was no stranger to Eve’s exuberance as she slipped her head into the wide-waisted chemise from the bottom, and watched her unblinkingly, holding a bright light green silk ribbon in both hands.
As Eve slipped her hands behind her neck to pull the tangled hair out of her dress, Anna quickly came up behind her and wrapped the wide ribbon around her waist, knotting it at the small of her back.
“Would you like to put on a robe as well?”
“No, thank you, not even a robe.”
Eve fiddled with the lace of the sheer cuffs that fell below her elbows, checking in the mirror to make sure the ruffled collar at the neckline hadn’t been turned upside down, and then, noticing the mess of her hair, she pulled it up high and untied it.
“Do you want me to fix your hair again?”
“No. It’s fine.”
“Are you going to go downstairs like this?”
This time, Anna looked a little surprised. It was common knowledge that not only ladies, but even middle-class young ladies, were expected to keep their hair tidy in front of their families, but the lady of the house merely smirked as if she didn’t give a damn about such things.
Leaving Anna with wide eyes behind, Eve went downstairs to find Joseph. Sure enough, the manor’s seasoned butler was completely unfazed by her disheveled appearance and answered her questions.
“Did all seven bottles arrive safely and unbroken?”
“Yes, my lady.”
“Please take them all to the dining room. The wines are fine, but the spirits need to be in ice buckets, and I’ll need three glasses each, and since we’ve all eaten, I’ll just ask that the appetizers be something simple, like fruit or cheese. Oh, and for the liquor, please bring it all at once, no need to go to the trouble of bringing one bottle at a time.”
“Understood.”
When she had finished ordering him, Eve reopened the door to the dining room with a smile on her face, the two men who were sitting awkwardly across from each other at the long formal table looked at her with a slight flush of color, but soon froze at the sight of her attire. Alberic’s expression twisted into one of embarrassment as he took in the sight of the milky black tea-colored hair that hung greedily down her neck.
“What’s with the hair?”
“Why, I thought I’d keep you waiting.”
Having never seen Eve in a dress before and seeing a woman’s untied hair for the first time in his life, Castel’s reaction was equally puzzled. He opened his mouth to speak, but quickly shut it. In the short time they’d been on a mission together, he’d quickly realized that Eve wasn’t the type of person who listened to others.
True to his suspicions, Eve strode up to the table, seemingly unperturbed by Alberic’s remarks, and plopped herself down on the seat in front of him. It wasn’t long before the doors to the dining room opened and a series of servants, each with something in their hands, entered.
