- Chapter 13 - The Convenient Hunter License
To keep Light around for ten days of sparring, Moyu casually added two more requests.
He believed that any rational person wouldn’t just readily agree without negotiation. Thus, he prepared for some back-and-forth bargaining.
Yet, to Moyu’s astonishment, Light had accepted without the slightest hesitation.
“…”
Moyu remained silent.
He never believed in free lunches. Seeing Light’s forthright acceptance, Moyu’s immediate thought was that Light might have ulterior motives.
“Are you sure you want to trade the achievement of capturing a wanted criminal worth a 20 million Jenny bounty for these three requests of mine?”
Moyu calmly reiterated the deal’s contents.
“Absolutely.”
Light nodded, took out a mobile phone, and said seriously, “Let’s fulfill the first request. Give me a bank account, and I will transfer 30 million Jenny to you immediately.”
“I don’t have a bank account.”
Having spent most of his life in a monastery, Moyu obviously didn’t have such luxuries.
Seeing Moyu’s lack of a bank account, Light then suggested, “How about an ID card? A simple photo would do, and I can get you a bank account set up in five minutes.”
Whether it’s instant large-sum transfers or quick bank account creation in the middle of the night, everything becomes effortless with a Hunter’s License.
This convenience was precisely why numerous amateur hunters desired the license.
“ID card?”
Moyu recalled that his cheap old man probably never got him one, so he shook his head, “I don’t have that either.”
“This…”
Light paused, not probing into the reasons, but instead made another suggestion:
“Then cash or gold. However, it can only be arranged during the day. If you’re okay with that, I’ll start preparing right away.”
“Fine.”
Moyu agreed.
30 million Jenny, when converted to Moyu’s previous world’s currency, had the purchasing power of nearly 2 million in the 1990s.
However, compared to the 30 million Jenny he was about to receive, what Moyu truly desired was a rapid enhancement of his abilities.
It’s a simple logic—
In the world of hunters, if you have the skill, you won’t have to worry about money.
For instance, with professions like Light’s, capturing a single wanted criminal could bring in tens or even hundreds of millions in income. If one’s abilities permit, one could even pursue bounties worth billions.
It’s worth noting that…
The claimed bounties are taxable.
Light refrained from mentioning the tax details, intending to let Moyu remember his kindness when he learns about it later. It was a minor strategy Light played.
After confirming that Moyu preferred gold as the medium for payment, Light dialed a number. Using his status as a professional hunter, he quickly resolved the matter with few words.
“Now, about the body outside,” Light put away his phone, glancing at the courtyard, smiling, “Leave it to me. I assure you there won’t be a trace left.”
Seeing Light’s thoroughness, Moyu couldn’t help but ask, “Just for the achievement of a criminal with a 20 million Jenny bounty, would you really go this far?”
“It’s circumstantial,” Light replied, nodding. Naturally, he wouldn’t reveal his true intentions but explained with a measured tone, “I’m on the brink of attaining the one-star rank. I’m just a step away, hence the high demand for achievements. That’s why I’m willing to pay this price. You do know what I mean by one-star, right?”
“It’s the title for a one-star hunter, isn’t it?”
“Exactly.”
“I see. No wonder you’re so generous,” Moyu remarked with a sudden realization.
Light chuckled, pointing his thumb towards the courtyard, “I’ll handle the body outside first. An agent will come later to take over.”
“Okay,” Moyu nodded.
Turning to leave, Light thought to himself, “From our first interaction until now, he’s shown remarkable prudence and insight, quite uncharacteristic for his apparent young age. Come to think of it… I’ve met another similar youngster before. Comparing them, Moyu seems a bit more impressive.”
“But, in the end, he’s just a kid. So easy to deceive.”
Light was secretly pleased with himself for managing to mask his true intentions behind the guise of achieving a one-star hunter rank.
Exiting the room, he headed straight to where Ian’s body lay, oblivious that Moyu, with half-closed eyes, watched him from behind. Little did he know…
“What a joke,” Moyu whispered to himself, shaking his head slightly.
Facing the three conditions that Moyu had laid out, Light’s desperation for achievements seemed barely convincing.
Moreover, if he was indeed in a hurry for achievements, he wouldn’t possibly agree to Moyu’s ten-day sparring request. A more logical reaction would have been to consent to owing a favor and maybe even raise the amount of Jenny for the achievement.
“Even if I don’t know what you’re looking for from me… from the current scenario, it looks like I stand to gain more,” Moyu thought to himself, head lowered.
Taking advantage of Light’s absence to clean up the courtyard, Moyu discreetly returned his shadow, restoring it to its usual state. When it comes to Nen abilities… it’s best to keep them hidden.
“Moyu…”
Monica’s voice drifted from the bed.
Using the faint light filtering through the window, Moyu glanced at Monica and then walked to the wall, turning on the light switch. As the light illuminated the room, he assured, “It’s all okay now.”
“You heard what Light said earlier. When the agent comes to handle the body, you can go down the mountain with them.”
“Okay,” Monica nodded without any hesitation.
Moyu retracted his gaze, bent down to pick up the pencil and the small knife used for sharpening it from the floor, placing them back on the table. He then whispered, “Before you leave, Light might want to chat with you. You’re smart, you know what to do.”
Monica had observed the entire achievement negotiation from the side. However, Light had consistently ignored Monica throughout, suggesting he had ways to ensure she would keep the secret.
“Yes, I know what to do,” Monica reassured. She wasn’t going to provoke a professional hunter. After a moment of hesitation, she gathered the courage to ask, “Moyu, can I… come back here in the future?”
“As long as it’s within the temple’s visiting hours, it’s no problem,” Moyu replied and then turned to leave.
Earlier, Light had confidently declared he wouldn’t leave any traces while dealing with the body. Moyu was rather curious and thought observing might offer some learning.
Monica silently watched Moyu’s retreating figure.
