- Chapter 12 - Light's Elated Surprise
Light was an ambitious and rather opportunistic professional blacklist hunter. Once he set his sights on a target, he’d go to great lengths to capture it.
After tracking the infamous Ian, he had gathered various intelligence and followed the leads.
Throughout this chase, his Hunter License provided numerous conveniences.
For instance, the emergency call Monica had made while fleeing through the forest ended up becoming an invaluable piece of information, pointing Light in the right direction.
So, he accepted the mission from the police.
Though he could have requested their assistance, having them send a large force to act as cannon fodder to draw out and pinpoint Ian’s location, Light wasn’t that ruthless.
In front of a competent Nen user, not to mention ordinary people, even Killua, who hasn’t yet mastered ‘Nen’, would need to beat a hasty retreat.
Light simply believed that involving the police was equivalent to throwing them into the fire.
He wasn’t willing to make such a move. He only asked the police to set up a perimeter around the scenic area and then proceeded alone.
The delay was due to him spending some time familiarizing himself with the layout of the scenic spot.
Terrain, environment.
And the dilapidated temple on the mountain along with its resident monk and his son.
He had gathered information on all these aspects.
So, when he tracked the scent of blood to the temple, his initial thought was that the poor father and son residing in the temple had met a tragic fate.
Thus, he used ‘Zetsu’ to hide his presence and quietly entered the temple to investigate.
Yet, he was startled to find Ian’s body in the courtyard.
Beyond his astonishment, he quickly sensed that he had been discovered.
“There’s a master here.”
That was Light’s judgment at that moment. He initially thought of the middle-aged monk from the intel he received. To his utter disbelief, the Nen user who had taken down Ian was not the temple’s ‘father’, but the ‘son’.
Despite this, he still believed the young boy before him was a master.
After all, anyone capable of defeating Ian and sensing his ‘Zetsu’ couldn’t possibly be weak.
So when he saw Moyu’s crude ‘Ten’, he instinctively believed Moyu was concealing his true skills.
This left him somewhat exasperated.
His primary target was Ian.
Now that the target was deceased, he certainly had no motive or reason to engage Moyu. He wasn’t looking for a fight…
Demonstrating his sincerity was merely to clarify to Moyu that he wasn’t an enemy, but a blacklist hunter whose primary job was to apprehend criminals.
Yet, Moyu wasn’t convinced.
Subsequently, Light realized he had misjudged again.
“How is that possible!?”
A novice Nen user who has just mastered ‘Ten’, managed to defeat a proficient practitioner who had a grasp over the four foundational techniques and even developed his own ‘Hatsu’?
Only a Nen user would understand how far-fetched this seemed…
So, how did this young man before him pull it off?
The stunned Light was consumed with curiosity.
He wanted to know every detail of how Moyu took down Ian.
In that moment—
Moyu moved swiftly, picking up the Hunter License and forcefully hurling it towards the ceiling in front of Light.
“Hmm?”
Light’s face changed, he leapt into the air without hesitation, catching the Hunter License.
What a joke!
In a sense, the Hunter License was even more important than his life.
Seeing Light’s protective gesture over the Hunter License, Moyu narrowed his eyes, gripped the small knife he usually used for sharpening pencils, and charged directly at Light, who was still in mid-air.
Before making a move—
Moyu had contemplated two outcomes.
If Light showed no reaction to the thrown Hunter License, he would decisively escape through the window.
Otherwise, Moyu would launch a tentative attack.
And that’s precisely what he was doing now.
Charging, halting!
Moyu brandished his knife aiming for the gap between Light’s thighs.
“!!!”
Seeing Moyu’s attempt to stab his groin with a knife, Light’s eyes twitched.
His tightly closed pores suddenly opened, releasing a massive amount of aura, wrapping every inch of his body.
This was the advanced technique, ‘Ken’.
Following that—
Moyu promptly withdrew.
And Light, who was wrapped in dense Nen, landed gracefully without any intention to attack.
Even if Moyu had just tried to stab him, he merely defended without retaliating.
Light’s behavior finally convinced Moyu of his lack of ill intent.
No choice…
Facing an opponent who could swiftly execute ‘Ken’, he didn’t even have a chance to struggle.
“I believe you now; you truly are a professional Hunter.”
Moyu dropped the knife, assuming a more cooperative demeanor.
Light silently observed Moyu, his eyes still twitching.
This guy, damn impressive!!!
Light took a deep breath, revealing a forced smile, “I also believe you now, you truly know only ‘Ten’…”
From their brief confrontation, Moyu could tell that Light indeed meant no harm. Meanwhile, Light deduced from Moyu’s amateurish knife attack that Moyu genuinely knew just ‘Ten’.
So—
How on earth did Moyu defeat Ian?
Light’s curiosity was mingled with excitement.
Regardless, this young man was undoubtedly a prodigy with terrifying potential!
If he could recruit him, securing a ‘Two-Star’ rank in the future would be assured!!!
Thinking this, Light was elated, not minding the previous knife incident at all.
“Let me reintroduce myself.”
Suppressing his elation, Light stowed away his Hunter License and said with a serious tone,
“I am Light Bulvo, a professional blacklist hunter. I have been tracking Ian Achille, the man whose neck you snapped outside.”
“Oh.”
Moyu nodded.
Light looked at Moyu as if expecting him to continue.
However, after a brief acknowledgment, Moyu fell silent.
The two exchanged glances, while Monica, huddled in the corner of the bed, looked utterly befuddled.
One second, two, three…
The room was filled with tension and silence.
Slowly, a question mark emerged over Light’s head. He murmured, nearly grinding the words through clenched teeth, “Aren’t you going to say anything?”
“Hmm.”
Moyu pondered for a moment, raising a finger, he calmly said, “I have a question for you.”
“Alright, but before you ask, haven’t you forgotten something? Like introducing yourself?”
Light stared intently at Moyu.
The information he had gathered before included the names of Moyu and Hawk.
But Light believed that introducing oneself in such a situation was a necessary step.
Because he wanted to strike a deal with Moyu.
“What I want to know is…”
Ignoring Light’s reminder, Moyu went straight to the point, “Since you’ve confirmed the death of Ian Achille, why complicate matters further?”
“…”
Light gazed silently at Moyu, then sighed after a moment, “You’re really not likable. Explaining this will be a bit complicated. In short, I want to make a trade with you.”
Hunters have rankings.
From lowest to highest, they are: Amateur Hunter, Professional Hunter, One-Star Hunter, Two-Star Hunter, and Three-Star Hunter.
Only by obtaining a license from the Hunter Association can one become a professional hunter.
After becoming a professional hunter, one can increase their star rank by accumulating ‘achievements’.
In the Hunter Association, star ranks represent status, power, and honor.
Thus, many professional hunters pursue higher star ranks throughout their careers.
Light was no exception.
Being a professional blacklist hunter, his way of accumulating achievements was naturally by capturing criminals.
He was currently aiming for the One-Star rank, which motivated his proposal for a trade with Moyu.
“Oh?”
Moyu raised an eyebrow, somewhat taken aback, and asked, “What do you want to trade for?”
“I need the credit for capturing Ian Achille. In return, I’m willing to offer you 5 million Jenny. Of course, you’ll also receive the full bounty for Ian Achille. What do you think?”
Light candidly stated his demand.
He had tracked Ian for almost half a month, and now at a crucial moment in his attempt to earn the One-Star rank, he wasn’t willing to let go so easily.
Therefore, he had to shamelessly propose a ‘trade’ to obtain the ‘achievement’ of capturing Ian from Moyu.
Hearing Light’s proposal, Moyu’s expression grew more peculiar.
Willing to part with 5 million Jenny for the achievement credit meant Light held it in high regard.
Yet, Light could easily take Ian’s body, claim to the outside world that he captured Ian, and earn the credit without spending a dime. Why then was he proposing this deal?
Had Light been ruthless, he could have killed both Moyu and Monica right there, turning this matter into an untold secret.
But Light didn’t.
This guy…
Is genuinely a “good person.”
Moyu remained silent for a few seconds before suddenly asking, “Light, you’re an Enhancer, right?”
“Yes, why?”
Light promptly admitted.
To progress from a One-Star to a Two-Star, one condition is personally mentoring a One-Star level professional hunter.
He already considered Moyu as the key to advancing to Two-Star in the future. Naturally, he would not keep any secrets from Moyu.
If not for fearing Moyu’s aversion, he would have already asked Moyu to become his apprentice.
“It’s nothing.”
Moyu shook his head and calmly said, “Back to the deal, I have no objections to the 20 million Jenny bounty on Ian Achille. As for the achievement, I have a different request.”
Light’s eyes flickered slightly.
By deliberately not mentioning the exact amount of Ian’s bounty, he was hoping Moyu would quickly agree to the 5 million Jenny in exchange for the credit.
However, Moyu already knew the specific amount…
“Let’s hear it.”
Light stared at Moyu.
Moyu raised three fingers slowly and said, “I have three demands. First, 5 million is too little, double it. Second, be my sparring partner for ten days. Third, owe me a favor.”
Listing three requests in one breath, Moyu didn’t even flinch.
Of course, he wasn’t expecting Light to agree to these three demands just for Ian’s achievement. What he truly desired was for Light to become his sparring partner.
As for the doubled 5 million request and the favor, they were merely thrown in to ensure Light would easily agree to the sparring.
“Regarding your three requests…”
Light appeared contemplative, yet internally, he was ecstatic.
Ten days of sparring!
This was a golden opportunity.
He was already fantasizing about showcasing his unparalleled teaching abilities during those ten days, hoping Moyu would eventually request him to become his master.
Moyu calmly waited for Light’s response, ready to negotiate away the other two demands if necessary.
However—
Light solemnly declared, “Your requests are reasonable. I accept.”
From hearing the demands to agreeing, there was not a hint of hesitation.
“???”
Moyu was taken aback.
This wasn’t how he expected the conversation to unfold.
