- Vol. 1 Chapter 17 - A Shared Gaze
“Someone’s here!” a voice called out at the door.
Everyone immediately looked outside. The villagers at the door scattered, and those in the yard hurriedly ran out, afraid of missing out on the spectacle that might be worth millions.
Even those perched on the walls turned around, their agility rivaling that of martial arts experts. Each person stretched their necks, gazing in the direction of the strange sound.
The rumbling sound grew closer and clearer, unmistakably the sound of iron hooves!
On the country road, a formation of cavalry appeared. The cavalry lined up in a row, riding on swift horses, their aura commanding and heroic.
Only one person lay on a horse, their figure moving in harmony with the horse’s gallop, their black robe billowing in the wind.
It was rare for officials and soldiers to visit a small mountain village, let alone a cavalry unit of this scale.
The villagers from both villages leaned against the walls and stood on the roadside embankments, watching the horse squad. The children were especially excited; after all, having a mule was already a sign of prosperity in most village households, let alone a horse. Seeing such magnificent horses was an extraordinary sight.
Of course, they assumed that this cavalry unit was merely passing through their Pingshan North Village.
Lian Youyou, having heard the sound of hooves, stepped out of Liu’s house and stood in a corner near the door. The front spots were already occupied, so she had to stand in the back.
However, she was not an ordinary person; her vision extended much farther than the average person’s. In fact, she could claim without exaggeration that she could see a man bathing a kilometer away in high definition.
Lian Youyou had already identified the riders on the horse squad. Suddenly, a swaying black cloth caught her eye, and her sharp gaze followed it to the horse. There, she caught sight of a black official’s boot, but the person wearing it was nowhere to be seen.
In an instant, a hint of a folded elbow was revealed around the horse’s neck, as if someone had their hands resting behind their head. However, the black sleeve of the elbow faintly flashed a dark-colored dragon pattern in the sunlight!
“The Imperial Court’s Nine Gates?!” she curled her lips, the opportunity to head to the capital, finally arriving.
“Clap, clap, clap, clap.” The horse squad came to a stop in front of Liu Qiang’s house, amidst the astonished gazes of the villagers. If the old village chief from South Village were here to witness this, he would be even more surprised, because the official mentioned by Lian Youyou had arrived.
Wei Chi Feng, leading the horse squad, and looked at the crowd with a stern expression. “Is this Liu Qiang’s house?”
The villagers hadn’t expected this official to come in relation to Liu Qiang’s death and quickly nodded in response.
Wei Chi Feng raised his hand slightly, and immediately, Guo De and the other soldiers dismounted, their disciplined military bearing evident.
However, only Lin Tingjun still lay on his horse, unmoving like a dead person.
Wei Chi Feng furrowed his brows slightly, addressing Lin Tingjun. “No need to speak; we’re here.”
Lin Tingjun offered no response, his eyes tightly shut as if he had fallen asleep.
Seeing that he didn’t react, Wei Chi Feng ignored him and dismounted with a sweep of his sleeve. “Go in!”
Instantly, Guo De and the others entered. They arranged themselves in two rows, clearing a path from the entrance of Liu Qiang’s house to the courtyard. The soldiers stood tall in the sunlight, their right hands resting on their sword hilts, exuding a unique military air.
The onlookers quickly gathered in front of Liu Qiang’s house, securing the best spots to watch. They completely ignored the fact that there was still someone in the horse squad.
Lin Tingjun lay on the horse’s back, his sword-like eyebrows suddenly furrowing. Dimly, he sensed a pair of eyes fixed on him. He opened his deep, starry eyes, slowly turned his head, and suddenly, a stunning and ethereal smile met his clear and profound gaze.
In that shared gaze, time seemed to halt, and the world melted away. In each other’s eyes, there was only one another, and all else disappeared.
Lin Tingjun’s expression froze; he had only ever reacted to women in two ways: either he didn’t remember their faces due to prosopagnosia, or they were vile creatures that needed to be exterminated.
But this woman, who appeared to be dressed as a village girl, possessed a breathtaking beauty akin to a solitary, pure-white lotus blooming in a pond, seeping into his heart, bringing a chill and a sense of comfort. For the first time, he felt comfortable around a woman.
“Hey, sleepyhead, how long are you going to keep ignoring me?” a girl with two braided twists said, “Let me introduce myself, handsome. I’m Lian Youyou. We might be together sometime in the future.”
Lian Youyou didn’t hesitate and went straight ahead, treating the situation without any gender differences. She naturally took hold of Lin Tingjun’s “delicate jade hand” hanging by the horse’s side, giving it a firm shake.
Then, with a radiant smile, she said, “Nice to meet you, and let’s cooperate happily.” This brilliant smile was like a snow lotus blooming in a green lotus pond, bathed in the golden rays of the sun.
Never before had a woman caused Lin Tingjun’s mind to momentarily go blank. Even the most beautiful and alluring women appeared almost indistinguishable to him; they all seemed like the same person.
Prosopagnosia was his talisman against female temptation.
However, today, this Lian Youyou, dressed in simple village attire with two rustic braids, and left him momentarily stunned.
In his heart, an instinctive wariness emerged. A woman who could stun him was undoubtedly no ordinary person.
Lian Youyou released Lin Tingjun’s hand and gestured towards the inside of the house. “Go watch the show. I know you’re from the Imperial Court’s Ninth Gate.”
As Lian Youyou uttered those words, Lin Tingjun was immediately taken aback and sat up in surprise.
Normally, once he lay down, not even a celestial being could move him a single inch. However, at this moment, just because of Lian Youyou’s words, he was suddenly sitting up.
And in that very moment, the women among the onlookers lost their composure.
“Ah! so handsome!”
“So incredibly handsome!”
“I… I can’t breathe…” These mesmerized exclamations resounded one after another.
Lin Tingjun was undoubtedly more handsome than He Shiqi. Although their features were not directly comparable, Lin Tingjun’s unique aura as a spy of the Imperial Court’s Ninth Gate far surpassed what He Shiqi could offer.
Because He Shiqi was mentally challenged, even if he had handsome features, he was still rejected by the mountain village girls due to his lack of a special aura.
Aura was an indispensable ingredient in a man’s attractiveness, just as it was poison for women.
Women could possess charm in various ways: being cute and lovely, dependent like a bird, alluringly seductive, or bewitchingly foxy. Each carried a unique flavor.
Men were the same. Cultured and refined, robust and compelling, rebellious and untamed, or indulgent and libertine, they each had their distinctive aura, each offering a unique taste.
But Lin Tingjun carried an air that was especially distinct. Like a black dragon in the moon, aloof and distant, with a hint of evil, akin to a sinister dragon descending, trampling over all beings, and making them all slaves.
Lian Youyou turned around, and Lin Tingjun surprisingly dismounted and stood behind her. A low, intense question burst forth amidst the screams of the women, “Who are you?”
Lian Youyou raised a finger, beckoning with a slight gesture, without saying a word, and continued walking forward.
