#10. The One Who Does The Little Miracles
Before returning to the greenhouse, Lia sought out the entrance caretaker to ask for assistance. With a recognizable face, he readily responded to Lia’s request. When asked what she needed help with, Lia replied with a smile.
“I need to transport fertilizer.”
“Fertilizer? Didn’t the telekinetic handle it for you?”
Lia was certain of the caretaker’s words. Kevin was indeed troubling her. Even the last possibility that he wouldn’t was gone. A disappointed smile emerged from Lia’s lips.
“Yes, that’s right.”
Without providing further explanation, Lia carried the borrowed items and headed toward the Desert Climate Plant Management Department. She wanted to quickly finish her work in the afternoon and see the miracles of the desert she was assigned to.
Since arriving at work today, she hadn’t even been able to visit the plants she was responsible for. It was a far cry from what she expected, such as being introduced to a colleague to work with officially or receiving instructions on how to work. She even thought she might hear detailed explanations about how the previous caretakers grew the Miracle of the Deserts.
Kevin seemed unwilling to formally hire Lia. She could see Kevin’s tent in the distance. After deliberately glancing in that direction, she moved her steps to where the fertilizer piles were stacked. Then she had to blink at the strange sight.
“Huh? Did I eat lunch wrong?”
There should have been more than half of the fertilizer left, but more than half of it was gone. It had initially been piled up to Lia’s height but had decreased to around waist level. Unless Lia’s memory was significantly flawed, someone had taken the fertilizer. Then who could it be?
As she pondered, a large shadow fell behind her. She didn’t need to turn around to know who the owner was.
“Are you tired already?”
When she turned around, Kevin with the same stoic expression as in the morning appeared. It was clear he regularly provoked her. Judging by the hands on his waist, it was no illusion.
“I was just about to move…”
“What’s that?”
“Oh, this.”
Kevin pointed with his finger to what was beside Lia. She responded with a happy expression. This was the secret weapon that Perth had revealed to her.
“A cart?”
“Yes! Carrying it around by hand is too inefficient, so I thought I’d use some tools.”
Lia pretended to be capable, using Perth’s lines. His advice was that to move heavy objects, an ordinary person without abilities should use a cart with wheels. Kevin raised an eyebrow without saying a word. Lia thought he was surprised and couldn’t say anything. She became even more enthusiastic. However, what came out of Kevin’s mouth was unexpected.
“So, you’re finally going to use your head like a human?”
“Huh?”
“When someone tells you to carry something heavy, using a tool like a cart is the first thing you should think of. Being a noble lady who hasn’t worked, you can’t think of anything other than using your own body.”
With a choked-up heart, Lia wanted to retort. But before Lia could open her mouth, Kevin threw out a casual remark.
“Still, not bad.”
What did he just say…? Lia felt elated at his words. To receive something akin to praise from him! It wasn’t much, but it somehow felt like acknowledgment. Forgetting her initial annoyance, she responded cheerfully.
“Yes! I’ll work hard.”
With that, she loaded the fertilizer onto the cart and started running excitedly.
“And be careful not to tip over the fertilizer!”
Kevin’s nagging continued from behind, but even that sounded like he was concerned about her. This was all thanks to Perth. After finishing her work, she vowed to express her gratitude to Perth. Excited, Lia completely forgot who might have moved some of the fertilizer.
* * *
Honestly, it was tiring, but the afternoon passed relatively quickly. With Kevin’s permission after carrying all the fertilizer, Lia was given time to look after the Miracle of the Desert. Her body felt heavy, but thinking about the Miracle of the Desert gave her newfound energy. She was determined to save them.
As the time for the sunset approached, the inside of the greenhouse began to darken like dusk. Since she had to leave when it got completely dark, time was limited. Lia ran with all her might.
“Hi.”
Finally arriving, still catching her breath, Lia looked after the Miracle of the Deserts. She was with five other roots, but she quickly recognized the Miracle of the Desert she was in charge of. She leaned in closely to observe.
Since watering yesterday, there didn’t seem to be any significant changes, which was fortunate. However, she still couldn’t figure out why they were wilting. She wondered if the soil was wrong and lightly dug around the roots with her fingers. But the soil was moist from the fertilizer Kevin had poured yesterday, and there didn’t seem to be any major issues.
“Why do you keep wilting…”
Just in case, she tried to channel her ability again. Still, there was no response. With the thought that maybe her ability had diminished, she lightly planted some seeds in an empty pot she had prepared and exerted a tiny amount of her ability with her fingertips.
Controlling the amount to pour was difficult, but she could manage to control it to sprout just a little. As if in response, a small green sprout emerged from the soil. Her ability wasn’t ineffective, so she wondered why it didn’t work on the Miracle of the Deserts.
She remembered hearing something about it being a more advanced species. Curiosity sparked. Lia made a mental note to try to remember the appearance of the Miracle of the Deserts as closely as possible.
It was difficult to ascertain with just the information she had now. She felt she needed to go to the library and look for some books. She decided to find out where the royal library was located. Lia bid farewell to the Miracle of the Deserts.
“See you again tomorrow.”
The other Miracle of the Deserts were also wilting, despite being provided with a climate similar to that of a real desert. The cause seemed to be related to the amount of water… As she tried to take off her necklace, heat rushed in. It wasn’t an issue with the climate control system.
Lost in thought, Lia left the greenhouse. She wanted to ask about the location of the library, but everyone had already left for the day. With few people she knew, Lia couldn’t find anyone to ask about the library’s location. Feeling helpless, she decided to have dinner.
“Ha… What’s this?”
There, as if waiting for her, Perth sat and guarded his spot. He seemed to be having dinner alone as usual. Seeing Lia once again in the corner where he usually ate alone, a hint of displeasure escaped from Perth’s mouth.
“I came just in case, but of course, you’re here.”
“Did you expect me to be?”
“Half and half. Don’t you eat with your colleagues?”
“Do I have to eat with them even during work hours?”
Interrupting mealtime made Perth’s response less than pleasant. Feeling crestfallen, Lia took her meal and sat far away from Perth.
“I’m sorry for bothering you. I’ll eat quietly in a hidden spot.”
With that, Lia pulled some nearby grass to cover herself. When she slightly used her ability to pull in the lacking parts, the vines grew rapidly. Soon, Lia’s figure disappeared from Perth’s sight. She should’ve stopped there, but for some reason, whether her control was faulty or not, the vines continued to grow and eventually bloomed flowers.
“Did you make it grow with your ability?”
“Oh… yes. I just made it grow a bit. I’m sorry.”
“It’s a flowering plant. This vine.”
A few very small white flowers were blooming exactly at the tip of the vine touched by Lia’s fingertips. He had planted the vine knowing it wouldn’t bloom because the prince had symptoms similar to a flower allergy, so flowers weren’t allowed. Remembering this fact, Lia turned pale.
“It’s not supposed to bloom, but it bloomed?! I’m sorry. Should I… should I cut it down?”
Perth’s expression conveyed a mixture of regret and disappointment. He was at a loss for words. The ability to make flowers bloom from a plant that wasn’t supposed to bloom. He had only thought of it as the ability to grow plants; he had never expected it to go this far. However, what he saw in front of him was undoubtedly a miracle.
“It’s okay for something this small. Let’s just leave it.”
Perhaps because of that, Perth came to a conclusion he wouldn’t have reached under normal circumstances. Just let that small and delicate flower be. He was known as ruthless by his subordinates. He was aware of their evaluations. However, at that moment, somehow his heart softened. It seemed like his gaze and heart had been stolen by that small, white presence.
“Was it a flowering species?”
Lia answered his question instead.
“Even if it’s not a flowering species, I can make it bloom. If I fully utilize my ability, the entire garden would be filled with flowers, wouldn’t it?”
She had often grown flowers in the greenhouse of her family’s estate, Penelope Mansion. Flowers that botanists had never seen before continued to bloom at Lia’s fingertips. This made Lia realize that the knowledge of botanists was not absolute. At least for the plants touched by Lia, there existed answers that only she knew.
“I never thought I’d see an exception right in front of me.”
“You’re saying interesting things. If all ability users are exceptions, then aren’t they the norm?”
Outside Psychedelia, ability users simply became a strange race. Psychedelia, where the citizens themselves were resources, greatly feared the outflow of manpower. In some border areas, they even bought Psychedelia citizens with money.
Psychedelia had managed to protect its citizens from being used as slaves without any exceptions. It didn’t matter which country the citizens were from. Officially or unofficially, Psychedelia’s citizens were thoroughly protected by Psychedelia. From an external perspective, they were firmly exceptions.
“That’s true.”
Because of the flowers, the distance between the two had unconsciously shortened. Lia hesitated and withdrew her body. However, Perth reached out his hand to stop her.
“Just… eat.”
“But still…”
“The garden isn’t mine anyway.”
Awkwardly shifting positions, the two ended up sitting in the same place, looking at the same spot. Perth chewed on the bread indifferently. Whether it tasted good or not was of no concern to him. It was like putting firewood into a fire.
“Thank you for today.”
As the atmosphere softened a bit, Lia cautiously brought up the gratitude she originally intended to express. However, Perth seemed to have forgotten even the advice he had given. Seeing his raised eyebrow, Lia knew he didn’t understand her words.
“The cart… you told me about.”
“Oh.”
Finally nodding, Perth seemed to remember. Lia shyly smiled and took out the potted plant she had hidden inside her coat.
“It’s a small repayment, but I sprouted it with my powers.”
About to say it was nothing, Perth involuntarily reached out his hand at the mention of Lia’s ability to sprout. However, as someone unfamiliar with plants, he couldn’t possibly know the true identity of the plant with just a sprout.
“What is this?”
“You’ll find out if you grow it!”
“Can I even grow it if I don’t know what it is?”
“You only need to water it once a week without worrying every day. And if any issues arise, just bring it to me. I’ll quickly make it fresh again for you.”
He had never even considered growing plants before. However, he became interested in Lia’s ability, sparking curiosity about this plant as well.
“Can this non-flowering plant bloom with your abilities?”
“Yes, you can witness a small miracle.”
His gaze followed her fingertips. A small, delicate flower exuded its modest charm. It was an unpredictable situation.
“Thank you.”
Unconsciously, Perth didn’t realize that something akin to a smile had crept onto his lips.
