Chapter 5  Don’t Sell Little Fifth

After such commotion that night, the family felt a little self-conscious when they had dinner.

‘I feel that this meal is like the best meal I’ve ever had.’

There is a crate full of mántóu, half of the sixteen eggs are used, and everyone has them in their bowl.

What kind of family dares to eat like this?

The eldest daughter-in-law was busy contemplating. This mother-in-law doesn’t know how to manage the house. The food she was eating was enough for the family to consume for a long time. What will happen to the next meal then?

Each family member has different expressions.

The fourth son stared at the contents of the bowl, unable to finish it.

Yu Sheng didn’t mind him and slowly finished her portion though there were still some eggs in the bowl.

First, she divided the eggs into the bowls of the fifth daughter and eldest daughter-in-law and said, “I don’t have much appetite; you should eat.” Then, ignoring their surprised expressions, she stood up and continued, “Eat a lot today; there are important things to do tomorrow. Also, if anyone made a mess because they haven’t eaten enough, I will show no mercy.”

Her tone was so fierce that they hurriedly stuffed the contents of their bowl into their mouths. The fourth son, however, had the gall to sneer before eating.

‘That’s right.’

It was only at this time that Yu Sheng found the benefits of her identity, so she didn’t have to be careful about what to say or do.

‘Anyway, since I have a notorious reputation, it’s perfectly normal to play tricks.’

Just as Sheng walked away, the eldest daughter-in-law was holding the bowl with an intoxicated expression on her face.

‘No matter what my mother-in-law is thinking, at least after so many days, our family can finally have a full meal.’

‘However, on second thought.’

‘It seems that ever since my mother-in-law was beaten up by the Yu family and woke up, her temper has really changed a lot.’

‘The egg noodles weren’t immediately delivered to Yu’s family.’

Yu Sheng didn’t allow her to think too much about it and called out, “Second and third son, come here.” 

The second son panicked for a moment.

“Is she going to beat us up for what happened today?” He tightly held his younger brother’s shirt. 

The third son shook his head and replied, “Let’s go now.” After saying that, the two stood outside the door of Yu Sheng’s room but they did not dare to go in.

“Go and fetch a few more buckets of water. The room doesn’t smell good. The two of you should also wash yourselves well. The trip to the mountain made you both dirty like a mud child.” Yu Sheng didn’t care what the two children were struggling with, and began to tidy up the room after giving them tasks.

What should be thrown away should be piled up in a trash and stink together.

The two outside the door were relieved to hear that Yu Sheng was looking for them because of this matter.

The third son rolled his eyes and wondered, “Mother, are you going to punish us?” 

“Why should you be punished?”

Yu Sheng rested her hands and muttered, “Is there anyone in a rush to ask for punishment? If you feel that you have made a mistake, then fetch a few more buckets of water. And next time you go back to the mountains, you have to be careful. If it weren’t for the daughter-in-law of the Sun family who notified me in time, you two would have waited too long and been eaten by the wolves.”

The entire village has a total of four wells, but two of them have dried up because the drought has gotten worse.

The other two remaining are located at the outermost part of the village and at the house of the village chief.

The second and third son ran back and forth several times, and finally brought back all the water needed by all the family members.

The next day, Yu Sheng looked at the several limbs on her body and felt a little bit confused.

There are only two rooms in the house. The eldest son shares a room with his wife, and the remaining children share the room with her.

In the past, the original owner was so cruel that she let the children sleep on the ground.

How can she let the children sleep on the ground, so they huddled together.

On a hot day, the body temperatures of several people are mixed together, just like a stove.

If there is a chance, she will build a new house after solving the food problem first.

It was easy to get out of the pile, and there was already a busy figure by the stove.

Steam was rising from the broken pot, so Yu Sheng took a closer look.

Another pile of wild vegetables.

She frowned and said, “There are still eggs left that have been set aside, cook one for everyone. What’s the point of eating if you are not full.”

The eldest daughter-in-law was not happy but still agreed and counted the eggs over and over again, counting three times before putting them into the pot.

A painful expression on her face.

“Everyone will come to the mountain with me after eating; we will leave early before dawn so that we won’t attract any attention.” After she finished speaking, she remembered something and added, “Eldest son should go and ask the village chief when the ox cart will go to town.” 

After selling those chestnuts, it’s time for the family to buy something.

One after another, the family finally got ready to leave together.

Everyone carried a basket on their backs and walked towards the mountain.

The fourth and fifth children only carried baskets because they were young and thin.

The surroundings are becoming even more remote as they are walking along the trail they had used yesterday.

Now that we are walking along the marks of yesterday, the surroundings noticeably get more and more remote.

Yu Sheng now had the leisure to squat and stay for a few moments when she saw some edible mushroom unlike yesterday where it’s full of anxiety.

So before she had arrived at the destination, a small amount of copper coins had already been exchanged.

“This is chestnut!” The fourth son was stunned.

To think that they could even have a whole tree.

The second and third son laughed, “That’s right, it’s because we were too excited to see this thing that we didn’t pay attention and fell into the pit.”

Needless to say, they rushed to the tree and worked hard.

Yu Sheng harvested the chestnuts and placed them into the basket with ease. She traded some of the chestnuts in the system shop while everyone was too busy to notice.

The copper coins in the system shop reached two hundred and fifty coins after selling all the chestnuts in the basket and the mushrooms that were collected from the road.

On the way back, the children chattered excitedly.

“Boiled chestnuts are delicious!”

Yu Sheng, however, shook her head and laughed, “Let’s stir-fry the chestnuts with sugar.”

The eldest daughter-in-law could hardly believe what she heard.

‘Isn’t it a bit too much for my mother-in-law to fry chestnuts with sugar.’

Nevertheless, she is still obedient to her mother-in-law, though she only dares to slander her in her heart.

Yu Sheng went on to say, “There is still a piece of jade pendant that can be sold. Let’s go to town tomorrow to sell it for some food. Let’s see what we need to buy at home.”

The jade pendant was given as a payment for the kindness of the original owner’s father. 

The original owner’s father favored her back then. The pendant looks precious so he simply gave it to her as dowry.

The strange thing is that no one in the Yu family knows that the original owner has received a precious pendant.

When the children heard that their mother were selling things in exchange for food, they thought there was something wrong with their ears, and they all showed blank expressions.

The fifth daughter burst into tears.

“Hoo hoo hoo, little fifth won’t eat again. Don’t sell little fifth, hoo hoo hoo.”
