Da Li Temple - Chapter 19.1
Chapter 19.1
Sweet Soup
Fortunately, as soon as Lord Su entered the crime scene, he was like a wolf that smelled meat. His whole mind was on the dead, without noticing the scene that happened to the two people over here.
??
Lin Wanqing sighed with relief, took the teacup, and whispered to the maid, “I am Da Li Temple’s recorder. I’m — not a girl.”
??
The maid froze at the words and carefully sized up Lin Wanqing before apologizing with a smile.
??
Lin Wanqing placed the teacup on the table beside her and asked the maid softly: “What kind of men does Miss Yun Dai usually meet?”
??
The maid anxiously shook her head and said, “Although my Miss is from a brothel, as a married woman, she knows how to behave and will not do anything improper.” She paused, a little embarrassed, “Besides, my master is powerful. He sent us here to serve and to monitor her. She must report on everything she sees and does every day.”
??
Upon hearing this, Lin Wanqing immediately asked her maid for Miss Yun Dai’s schedule report. It was true that she hadn’t seen any men. Although, as a former courtesan, she had contact with countless men. But if those men didn’t come to the house, there were no conditions for them to commit the crime. Besides, the murder happened in broad daylight. It was impossible for a man to enter a woman’s bedroom dignifiedly in broad daylight without being noticed by the subordinates.
??
If only one person didn’t know, it would be a coincidence. But all four of the deceased’s maids said they had not seen any men. There must be something wrong —
??
Lin Wanqing couldn’t get through it for the time being, so she asked the maid for Miss Yun Dai’s schedule record. The sun was already high in the sky when they finished inspecting and coming out from the crime scene. The wind blew early summer sunlight, and the tree’s shadows on the ground shook. The new cicadas were croaking in the branches, and Lin Wanqing on the carriage tugged at her scarf. It was too hot. The person on the opposite side still had a cloudy face and an unfriendly look. She silently lifted the carriage curtain to get some air.
??
“It’s hot?” A cold, low male voice with some weary huskiness.
??
Lin Wanqing turned back and smiled, reluctantly putting down the curtain in her hand and said, “No.'” After saying this, she wiped the fine sweat on her forehead with her sleeve.
??
Su Moyi watched her with a tightened brow. When dealing with Liang Weiping, she could smile like a flower, but when dealing with him, she looked like this, which was even worse than crying.
??
Su Moyi’s face sank even further, gloomy like a cumulonimbus cloud on a midsummer evening. He turned his body to the side, casually picked up the records of the autopsy, and looked down.
??
Again, there were no conversations all the way. Not long after, Su Moyi and his party returned to the Da Li Temple.
??
Once Lin Wanqing entered, she saw a woman wearing a light scarlet jacket with a scarf on her shoulders standing on the main hall’s wide-open door. She didn’t look like she was from an ordinary family’s residence.
??
When that little maid saw them, she looked awe-struck for an instant and greeted them respectfully. Lin Wanqing hadn’t seen her before and was just about to ask when she heard that familiar icy voice ring from her side.
??
Su Moyi furrowed his brows, somewhat impatiently saying, “Didn’t I tell Imperial Grandmother that the Da Li Temple is a place to discuss official matters.”
??
The little maid became embarrassed but still held a smiling look. She uncovered the food box in her hand and said, “This is not from the Empress Dowager. It’s Princess Jiading’s intention.”
??
“Princess?” The fine lines between Su Moyi’s brows deepened, “Then it’s all the more reason why I can’t accept it.” As he spoke, he didn’t even look at the soup. He walked past the maid and headed to the study room.
??
The little maid anxiously followed behind him. Jogging to catch up, she explained in a trembling voice, “The Princess is sympathetic to Lord’s hard work in investigating the case, and she felt bad in her heart, so she specially prepared Lord’s favorite chilled lychee soup herself, wanting to thank the Lord.”
“What I solved is my case. I don’t need another person to thank me.” Su Moyi sneered, but his steps did not stop. Without looking back, he entered the study room and asked the guards to stop the people outside.
??
Not expecting Lord Su to be so unsympathetic, the little maid was so anxious that she was close to tears.
??
Lin Wanqing, who had followed along and couldn’t interject, was apologetic. She stood outside, looking at the little girl’s red eyes, aggrieved and scared look. That nosy heart of hers quietly emerges again. She took the food box in the little maid’s hand, let her wait outside, and then entered the study room.
??
Su Moyi was burying his head in the paperwork when she heard Lin Wanqing come in. He didn’t say anything and didn’t look up.
??
The light was unlit in the study room. Although it was daytime, the sunlight couldn’t shine through, and the place was dark. Coupled with Su Moyi’s unknown-why-gloomy-mood, Lin Wanqing became nervous but dared not to open her mouth to interrupt his work in hand. She only walked over, intentionally making heavy footsteps, waiting for Lord Su to raise his head to reprimand her.
??
Surprisingly, Su Moyi seemed to be deaf. No matter how much noise Lin Wanqing made, he didn’t give her a wink.
??
Lin Wanqing opened her mouth to call him. However, before the word ‘Su’ left her mouth, the person before her said: “I did not look for you. Go out.” Short, decisive, and unforgiving, extremely in line with Lord Su’s style.
??
But Lin Wanqing was a person who ate soft, not hard. She walked over to Su Moyi’s desk and reached out with a wave of her hand. The neatly arranged brushes on the desk suddenly went askew and fell.
??
“You!!!” Su Moyi’s face changed, and stand up. He furrowed his brows at Lin Wanqing and was about to reprimand her. But the person in front of him holding the food box in her hand, smiling and calling out ‘Lord.’
??
His heart skipped a beat. That ‘Lord’ seems to have turned into softness, drilling in from the heart of the ear, sweeping his back and landing on the tailbone. A numbing sensation rippled along the way, causing Su Moyi to hold the corner of the desk unnoticeably.
