A brief silence followed.
A faint, almost whisper-like voice finally sounded, a warm breath lingering by her ear, “I don’t know.”
It seemed he truly couldn’t remember anything.
The ground floor was equipped with surveillance cameras, and Lin Yu didn’t want any unexpected complications. She decided to leave through the window using the same rope she had used to enter.
The hooked end of the rope securely bit into the windowsill. She held onto the rope with an empty hand, skillfully climbing up onto the windowsill.
The angel hadn’t seen the outside world for a very long time.
Though his memory was completely gone, the desire to escape this place remained in his mind. However, the tight security and his weakened state had always led to failed attempts at escape, followed by increasingly cruel punishments.
Now it was night, and the vast open field outside was shrouded in darkness, covered by a veil of black.
He saw the glistening crescent moon emerging from the cotton-like black clouds in the sky, shedding a soft light on the ground. He saw rows of block-like houses, their lights glimmering like stars. He also saw the undulating mountains on the horizon, beyond which lay a wider world.
A world he had never seen before.
A gentle female voice was carried by the evening breeze, “Hold on tight.”
Just as her words fell, Lin Yu leaped from the third-floor window.
The sudden sensation of falling made his heart feel suspended in mid-air. The fiercely gusting summer wind cut against his cheeks like a blade. Instinctively, he clung tightly to the body of the intruder.
Almost involuntarily, his tattered and damaged wings spread against the wind, revealing a breathtaking expanse of pure white.
From a distance, it appeared as if an angel was descending from the heavens, cradling a young girl in his arms. The moonlight flowed down like water, casting a radiant glow on his wings, which created a dreamlike scene.
The length of the rope had been accurately measured. Lin Yu stopped herself about half a meter above the ground. She landed lightly, carefully placing the angel down behind her.
As planned, an inconspicuous black car was parked right in front of them. The window rolled down to reveal the calm and handsome face of a young man in the driver’s seat.
Jiang Qian, a former member of the special forces responsible for the extraction, was known for being tough and reserved. Lin Yu waved at him with a smile, then turned to open the car door, gesturing for the angel to get in.
“Go ahead.” She said, “It’s time to say goodbye to those bastards.”
*
The angel was surprisingly well-behaved, remaining quiet in the back seat since getting into the car, occasionally glancing outside with curious eyes.
Under the light, Lin Yu carefully observed him and realized that his wounds weren’t limited to his wings; whip marks and bruises covered almost his entire arm, and his neck was also bruised and swollen.
Those trashy people really dared to go all out.
Sensing her gaze, the angel tilted his head slightly.
Some of his overgrown hair lightly covered his eyelids. His clear blue eyes radiated a gentle and serene light, like a tranquil lake illuminated by golden sunlight.
Then he blinked, a shy and gentle smile forming at the corner of his mouth.
So… so adorable!
The inner teenage girl that had long been dormant was resurrected! He’s so gentle, he must be an angel!
Oh no, wait, he actually is an angel.
For the first time ever, the thick-skinned Lin Yu felt her breath hitch as she was scrutinized by someone. She turned her head in an attempt to appear composed.
Having successfully rescued the subject of her mission from the hidden room, her work was done. After the turmoil, Lin Yu was in need of some cooking to relax. She simply asked Jiang Qian to take her to a nearby mall.
“I have to go now, this car will take you to a safe place,” she bid the angel farewell before leaving, reassuring him with a side glance, “Don’t be afraid, no one will bully you anymore.”
Years of ingrained obedience made him automatically respond with a “Okay.”
Words he wanted to say were stuck in his throat, his pale lips slightly parted and then slowly closed. The angel with white wings sat silently in the car, his gaze cautiously following the fading figure of someone who was gradually moving away.
In a daze, he realized that he might never see that person again.
*
After getting out of the car, Lin Yu embarked on a shopping spree. Carrying a bag full of ingredients, she arrived at the shelter close to 9 PM.
“Lin Yu! You’re finally here!”
As soon as she got off the elevator, Dracula rushed over with a red popsicle in his mouth. “We’ve been waiting for you for so long! What are we eating today? What, what, what?”
Ling Xi sat on a bench and coldly snorted, “Only you were waiting.”
“Who’s the one who’s been sitting here without moving since noon?” Dracula swallowed a piece of ice, “Even bored enough to kick your own head like a football, you insisted on not leaving the central square, who’s that?”
Jiu Jiu chimed in with a smiling face, “And when a new researcher passed by, their head accidentally hit his chest, scaring the person away instantly.”
The researcher was strolling along, singing a song, and the moment they got off the elevator, someone’s head fell on them. The scariest part was, the head kept rolling and shouting, “Let the head fly for a while!”
“It’s really a horror movie setting, isn’t it? Don’t casually use the gag from ‘Let the Bullets Fly’ to scare people! Just imagine that scene, it’s really eerie!”
Lin Yu looked at Ling Xi with a complicated expression.
“Ah, I’m really sorry. I didn’t expect you to do this just to wait for me.”
Ling Xi’s face was flushed, his teeth gritted.
“But then again,” Lin Yu looked at the popsicle in Dracula’s mouth, wrinkling her brow at the pungent smell, “Is this popsicle expired?”
“You don’t get it! It’s a premium blood plasma popsicle made by a researcher at my request.” He licked his lips smugly, “Made from 100% human blood, no preservatives or additives, the only one of its kind in the world. Not all popsicles are called Blood Plasma Cake.”
Dracula was full of enthusiasm, raising the popsicle as if it were a wine glass, and in a deep and rich voice, he said with a slow tone, “Cheers.”
Lin Yu was speechless.
Originally, this was a classic action used by medieval vampires to taste blood from a wine glass. But today, Dracula was back in his everyday home attire, with the huge Cthulhu head taking up his entire chest. Coupled with his enraptured and intoxicated expression as he licked the ice cream and his motion of repeatedly inserting and removing it from his mouth.
“I’m sorry, Dracula. I really shouldn’t have had any expectations of you.”
“Stop it, otherwise I’ll definitely report you for being inappropriate.”
“I’m sorry for keeping you waiting. I cleared my throat, trying not to burst into laughter. I’m going to the kitchen to make some late-night snacks. Today, we’ll have Korean-style finger foods, so they might be a bit spicy.”
“Of course, no problem! We’ve been eating vegetable salads for a week straight. This isn’t a balanced meal at all, it’s more like a ‘grazing on the grasslands’ style of feeding! Have you ever seen a vampire nibbling on grass?”
She understood his point.
“Dracula, can you please wipe off the melted popsicle? It’s really scary to talk while spitting out blood at the same time!”
