At that time, he didn’t have any obvious external injuries so the source of those bloodstains remained an unknown puzzle which intensified her curiosity.
The cake’s surface was a translucent pink jelly with a soft and extremely elastic texture that made it bounce gently on the tip of the tongue, offering both a lively and delightful tactile and gustatory experience.
The light cream blended with the delicate scent of roses, and the fresh and sweet lychee fruit was tender and juicy. The aroma emerged layer by layer as you chewed, blending the delightful sweetness with an elegant richness, and filling the air with a fragrance that could almost tenderly melt the heart.
“Very delicious,” Chi Yu paused for a moment and then looked at her and said, “You’re quite skilled.”
“Of course.”
Although she was used to praise from others about her cooking, Lin Yu still raised her chin in response to that compliment.
Chi Yu with slightly lowered eyes, smiled softly, and almost imperceptibly. At the same time, he heard the straightforward question from the girl in front of him, “Who are you, and why were you locked up here?”
Darkness silently veiled his gaze, and he paused for a while before casually looking up. With a self-mocking tone and a slight sweep of his eyes, the young man softly said, “So you care about me?”
Without hesitation, Lin Yu retorted, “Feeling quite good about yourself, aren’t you?”
It was only then that Chi Yu smiled, his eyes bent, and he said in a joking tone, “If you knew what I am, would the information on the door plate still be blank? Those who live on the sixth floor underground are fundamentally no different. They are all ruthless, bloodthirsty monsters who don’t blink an eye at killing.”
A mysterious silence filled the room.
Lin Yu’s brief laugh lightly tapped his eardrums, and then a soft and gentle hand fell on top of his head, somewhat clumsily patting it.
Her nails pressed deep into her flesh due to nervousness, and Chi Yu’s racing heart gradually calmed down. When he looked up, his gaze met Lin Yu’s.
She withdrew her hand, smiling carelessly, without a trace of tenderness or sympathy, making his nervousness seem somewhat ridiculous. “Who would describe themselves that way? You kids tend to overthink things. I’m just living fine, aren’t I?”
Chi Yu’s pupils slightly narrowed, and he responded leisurely, “That might change in the next second.”
After a brief pause, he emphasized, “Also, my body stopped growing several years ago. According to age, I’m older than you.”
“Well, if you’re willing to explain, it means you’re not going to kill me,” Lin Yu teased, enunciating each word, “Little brother.”
She had a rather wicked sense of humor, and Chi Yu could do nothing but accept it.
Unconsciously, a smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He coughed a few times and then reached under his pillow with his right hand, retrieving a small circular object. He extended it towards her, and said, “Here, a gift for you. As a reward for the dessert.”
It was a blood-red circular jade pendant, rich and crimson like the blood mist permeating within it. It exuded an elegant and mysterious allure.
“This is a talisman; when you encounter life-threatening danger, it can save your life,” he said, not giving her a chance to refuse, and placed it in her hand. “This thing isn’t valuable, and besides, I can’t leave this room. Keeping it has no meaning.”
Lin Yu chuckled and imitated his previous words without missing a beat, “So you care about me?”
“It doesn’t matter if you die,” Chi Yu shifted his gaze away, a sinister smile lurking in the depths of his eyes, “But I still want to continue eating desserts.”
He really was a heartless brat.
Lin Yu was about to retort, but her thoughts were abruptly interrupted by her ringing phone. Her expression grew more serious as she answered the call.
“Sorry, there’s a new mission, I have to go.” She hung up the phone, placed the talisman in her shoulder bag, and hurriedly bid farewell to him. “Thanks for the talisman. I’ll bring you some food when I have time.”
Chi Yu was momentarily stunned when he heard the ringing, and only now did he respond with a deep and humorless tone devoid of his usual teasing, “Mmm.”
As the door closed, he finally gave up pretending to sit up and lay down on the bed, feeling utterly exhausted.
The room fell into silence, with only the ticking of the second hand and the bright fluorescent light filling the space. The heavy atmosphere was suffocating like turbid water which made it hard to breathe.
Chi Yu thought to himself, it was like a tomb.
Living like this, he seemed no different from being dead.
For some reason, he weakly curled his lips and muttered softly to himself, “Why is my character still so terrible?”

After she left, Lin Yu didn’t need to concern herself with what would happen in that isolated room. She rushed out, recalling Chen Beici’s final words.
“Captain, this mission is not only challenging, but your partner is also difficult to handle. That lycanthrope, Lu Yinge, has an extreme aversion to humans by nature. He might even come after you, and the likelihood of internal strife is estimated to be around ninety percent.”
It wasn’t just a simple case of internal strife.
That guy literally wanted to devour her, in the literal sense.
—Although she was considering making a pot of braised wolf meat out of him.
