“Hey, what’s that look in your eyes?”
As Leon’s scrutiny intensified, Elise’s irritation began to show, hinting at a potential outburst.
Recognizing that this wasn’t the right time to provoke her, Leon withdrew his gaze and discreetly moved towards the bookshelf beside the alchemical table.
“Are these the recipes you use for making drinks?” he asked, his curiosity piqued.
“Those are notes left behind by an alchemist who used to reside here. My mixology skills were cultivated from the insights found in those very notes,” Elise explained.
“Alchemy notes? For making drinks?” Leon’s curiosity deepened as he picked up a hefty volume from the shelf. The pages were filled with faint, handwritten text that read “Delicious Edible Plants.”
Swiftly scanning through the contents, he discovered detailed descriptions of the world’s plants, including their origins, flavors, toxicities, and methods of consumption.
Similar to Earth, the alcoholic beverages in this world were also derived from various plants, slike on earth, grape wine came from grapes, beer from barley malt, rice wine from rice, millet, black rice, corn, glutinous rice, and wheat, as well as the renowned tequila made from agave in Mexico.
The book also delved into a classification of blended drinks. These beverages used distilled or brewed alcohol as a base and incorporated various herbs, medicinal ingredients, seeds, and fruits through techniques like blending, soaking, and mixing. This resulted in an array of drinks, such as different absinthe-infused concoctions created by blending “wine + wormwood,” or Chinese medicinal wines steeped with a variety of herbs.
As Leon casually flipped the pages, he noticed several plant ingredients that seemed strikingly familiar, reminiscent of certain cocktail ingredients on Earth. If these plants were used as raw materials, new and unique drinks indigenous to this world could potentially be concocted.
An unexplored realm of alcohol, a fresh perspective, seemed to open up before him. This discovery excited him even more than the revelation of magic in this world.
He picked up another book from the shelf, titled “Biological Ingredients for Exquisite Beverages.” After scanning a few pages, his expression shifted.
The book contained a collection of bizarre and even grotesque ingredients, some of which were remarkably exotic. Examples included octopus blood, eyeballs from malevolent eye creatures, spinal fluid from thunder leopards, pituitary glands from tripedal apes, and an assortment of other monstrous organs. Leon even encountered descriptions of several types of excrement…
Closing the book with mixed feelings, he voiced a concern, “Elise, please tell me that you haven’t added strange and unsavory things like eyeballs to your customers’ drinks.”
Elise responded earnestly, “Oh, I definitely have. There’s a drink mentioned in these notes that involves adding the eyeballs of a Hundred-Eyed Creature to the wine, followed by mixing in milk from a female Chimera. The eyeballs of the Hundred-Eyed Creature are small and round, similar to pearls. Hence, the drink is called Pearl Milk Wine.”
“And the customers actually drank that?”
Elise sheepishly scratched her head. “Yes, they did, but they never came back to the bar again.”
No wonder the Emerald Bar had such a scarcity of customers. Leon couldn’t help but sigh.
There were only a few eligible customers for the bar, and even fewer actually made their way there. To compound matters, their experiences were tainted by Elise’s peculiar and devilish drinks. A weight of responsibility settled on him.
Should those customers return, he was determined to do everything in his power to restore the reputation of the Green Gem Bar.
“Where’s that notebook?” Leon asked, eager to delve further into the alchemist’s creations.
Elise retrieved a black leather-bound notebook from the shelf and handed it to Leon.
“Here you go, this is the one.”
The cover of the notebook appeared to be made from some kind of creature’s hide, giving it a rugged texture. Although the cover bore no inscription, the bottom right corner of the first page held a name scrawled in untidy handwriting: Rabid Levah.
Presumably, that was the name of the alchemist. Additionally, four words were written on the page: Understand, Dissect, Transform, Construct.
These likely encapsulated the philosophy of the alchemist, Rabid Levah.
As Leon continued to flip through the pages, he discovered that the notebook initially contained serious alchemical research, documenting Rabid Levah’s insights into the field. The earlier pages were filled with peculiar symbols and intricate patterns, accompanied by cryptic and often indecipherable text.
However, as he progressed through the notebook, he encountered unusual formulas, each accompanied by descriptions of the drinker’s experience and directions for further refinement.
For instance, there was a concoction named “Moonlit Assassin”:
Night Demon Flower Pollen 5g, Fresh Silver Ring Snake Blood 20ml, Resentful Spirit Dust 3g, Barley Beer 40ml. Once blended, the resulting colour was exquisitely attractive—subtly crimson and refreshingly cool, reminiscent of the finest noble wines of the capital. The taste was invigorating, with a hint of bitterness and a robust aftertaste. Incorporating the advanced blood of the Silver Ring Snake’s evolved form—the White Silver Flying Snake—might possibly enhance the flavour profile…
After perusing a few more pages, all the mysterious symbols and obscure text disappeared, leaving behind only peculiar formulas and speculative ideas. O n a particular page, there was a confession penned by the alchemist Rabid Levah:
“Oh venerable alchemical deity, the wise Hodheim, please guide me. Does the sacred stone containing the secret of eternal life truly exist in this world? I have dedicated my entire life to the study of alchemy, yet the method to create the Philosopher’s Stone eludes me, and hope remains distant. But alas, my once radiant hair, as brilliant as sunlight, has all but vanished. Forgive me, humble devotee of Hodheim, for I have wielded alchemy to indulge my base desires and have plummeted into corruption. Inconsequential alchemical apprentice, Rabid Levah.”
Leon closed the notebook in silence.
Without a doubt, this alchemist named Rabid Levah was a pioneer in the realm of mixology in this world. Perhaps he stumbled upon these concepts while pursuing alchemical endeavours, eventually recording his findings.
Although some of the ingredients seemed peculiar due to his alchemical studies, his methods were undeniably ground-breaking. If he had initially dedicated himself to the study of drinks rather than alchemy, he could have become a legendary mixologist.
Unfortunately, his notes hadn’t spread, and his sole heir was a spider utterly ignorant of mixology.
Sensing Leon’s gaze upon her, Elise detected a tinge of inexplicable sadness and sympathy in his eyes, a sentiment that irked her.
“Hey, if you keep looking at me like that, I might just give you a good punch.”
Quite sensitive, is this the legendary spider-sense?
Leon withdrew his gaze and put the notebook back on the shelf. He asked, “Can I make copies of these books on the shelf?”
“Make copies?” Elise raised an eyebrow in curiosity.
Leon retrieved the magical copying book he had acquired from Alison’s magical emporium, which still had some blank pages left.
“I mean duplicating the content,” he clarified.
“Oh? Are you interested in learning the recipes?” Elise asked, intrigued.
Leon chuckled and shook his head. “Oh, I wouldn’t dare to add strange and unsavory elements to customers’ drinks. It’s more about reference. Perhaps I can develop unique beverages native to this world.”
“You’re quite the thinker. Sure, but remember, once you create a new recipe, you have to teach me first thing,” Elise playfully instructed.
“No problem,” Leon agreed readily. He proceeded to copy all the books from the shelf into his magical copying book. He intended to take his time reading them later; after all, the bar wasn’t bustling with customers at the moment, leaving him with ample free time.
As he turned around, he noticed a fist-sized spider dangling near Elise’s ear, seemingly communicating something to her. Elise’s expression shifted to one of surprise.
“Oh? Someone has ventured deep into the cavern?” Elise mused aloud.
Leon’s interest was piqued. “Who do you think it could be?”
Elise seemed thoughtful. “Could be a treasure hunter or an adventurer seeking the mysteries of this place. But to venture so far in… that’s rare.”
Leon nodded. “Well, whoever it is, we might have some unexpected visitors soon.”
Elise smirked. “Seems like it. Let’s hope they’re not disappointed by our lack of traditional drinks.”
Leon grinned back. “I’ll make sure to create something memorable for them.”
As they exchanged playful banter, a sense of camaraderie and excitement filled the air. The mysterious world of alchemical mixology had opened up a new realm of possibilities for both of them, and they were ready to embrace it together.
Little did they know that the arrival of this adventurous soul would mark the beginning of a new chapter for their Emerald Bar, one that would intertwine their destinies in unexpected and enchanting ways.
