- Chapter 14 : "be gentle, will you?"
Leon thought that he could simply pay to register, but he didn’t expect there would be a trial task. The task was to explore the spider cave outside the city and retrieve the spider’s venomous fang as evidence.
If they couldn’t complete it, the temporary team he formed with Lanya would lose its effectiveness in five days. They wouldn’t be able to continue receiving information and tasks from the adventurers’ guild.
Leon wasn’t very interested in adventures and such in this world; his main concern was avoiding dangerous situations.
However, seeing Lanya’s eager expression, he couldn’t bear to say much.
After leaving the adventurers’ guild, Lanya asked, “Leon, what kind of person do you want to become?”
“An excellent bartender, and I already am one. With some more experience accumulated over time, I’m confident I can improve further.”
Leon was very confident in his talent for mixology. His interest had developed into a complete fascination, to the extent that he even left home to live alone in order to freely pursue his career as a bartender.
“Not that, I mean, what kind of combat profession do you want to choose in this world?”
“I don’t want to engage in combat.”
Lanya wrinkled her delicate nose. “If you had to choose one?”
Leon chuckled, “I don’t even know what professions are available here.”
Lanya proceeded to explain, “There are more common ones like mages, warriors, thieves, knights. These are just general categories, and each profession has different specializations. For instance, within the mage category, there’s black magic, white magic, blood magic, necromancy, and various elemental magics. Among warriors, there are berserkers, beast warriors, swordsmen, axemen, and so on.
These profession names are just titles used to distinguish combat styles and for convenience, similar to how regular professions like chefs, hunters, and tailors work.
There’s no strict boundary between them. For example, a muscular warrior might also use magic, and a mage might wield a great sword. Of course, most people don’t have that kind of talent, and even if they do, they usually choose to specialize in what they’re best at to achieve higher achievements.”
After some thought, Leon replied, “Then I’d probably choose to be a mage.”
Lanya agreed, “I also think you’d make a good mage. The Mage Guild is located in the eastern part of the city. I’ll take you there for a test. You might have great potential.”
“I’ve heard someone say that a hero from another world, during the test at the Mage Guild, had such high potential that the crystal ball they used for the test actually shattered.”
At this moment, the sound of a frog came from Leon’s pocket. He sighed, “Let’s forget about it today. It keeps making noise, and it’s probably not suitable for that place.”
Lanya imagined a frog’s croak echoing in the elegant Mage Guild and realized it wouldn’t be appropriate. They might even get kicked out.
“Yeah, maybe we should go tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”
Lanya left happily , her steps light and joyful. With the gold coins Leon had given her, she planned to indulge herself at the magical restaurant she had always wanted to visit.
Leon continued on his way to the bar, strolling at a leisurely pace, taking in the sights of the unfamiliar world’s streets.
As he passed an alleyway, he heard the clashing sound of armor, and a figure in gold and red suddenly burst out of the narrow alley.
He stared in surprise at the figure.
“Huh, Prince Lieyang?”
The Prince, at this moment, had lost his previous pride and composure. His shiny golden armor was stained with blood, his sharp fangs were bared, and he was panting heavily, looking extremely disheveled.
The Prince also saw Leon.
“Bartender, save me!”
He rushed towards Leon as if he had seen a savior, grabbing onto Leon’s arm.
“Save you? What happened?”
“No time to explain, just take me to the Emerald Tavern.”
Leon looked toward the alley, and nothing appeared in the dim passageway. The Prince had already started moving in the direction of the bar, and Leon hurried to catch up.
“Someone’s after you?”
The Prince, running and gasping, answered, “Yes, they’re chasing me. There are too many people on this street, making it difficult for them to attack. But once I get to a less crowded area, they’ll strike again. They’ve already killed my accompanying guards.”
Suddenly, Leon felt that following the Prince had been a mistake. If he were discovered by assassins while with this lizardman prince, he might become implicated.
However, it was too late for regrets at this point.
The two arrived at the front of the Emerald Tavern. Leon took out the key and forcefully inserted it into the lock, struggling due to the haste of their journey.
He heard a light sigh in his ear:
“Ouch, brat, be gentle, will you?”
Leon’s movements froze, and he turned to the Prince. “You’re cracking jokes while being pursued?”
The Prince shook his large lizard head and pointed incredulously at the tavern door. “Not me, the door.”
“The door?” Leon paused and then laughed. “you’re saying the door can speak? Don’t tease me, that’s impossible.”
At that moment, a sharp voice came from the door again.
“If you’re going to open it, do it already. Can you stop poking around in there?”
Leon’s hand trembled, and with a click, the wooden door swung open in response to his key.
The door was really talking!
“It’s really you, and you can talk?”
“If you don’t mind, hurry up and pull it out. A country bumpkin who has never seen the world.”
The door made another sound: “As you can see, I am not an ordinary door, but a magic door with wisdom, which can lead to different worlds.”
Oh! a door which can lead to another world, so what if it can talk.. It’s normal, everything is normal, thought Leon.
“Excuse me Mister door, what is your name?”
“Huh? Have you ever seen a door that needs a name? If you must call me something, just call me Door Spirit. Oh, and don’t address me as ‘mister.’ I don’t have the male-female distinction of humans.”
“Okay, Door Spirit.”
Once inside the tavern, the Prince finally relaxed.
“This tavern is indeed extraordinary. Those guys definitely won’t be able to trace me here.”
The Door Spirit said, “The ones chasing you are outside.”
The Prince nervously asked, “They can’t come in, right?”
“Don’t worry, it’s not business hours right now. Even if it’s a deity from this world, they won’t be able to enter. They’re probably wondering where you’ve gone.”
The Prince was finally at ease.
Leon suggested, “You should stay here for the night. Wait until they leave before you go out.”
With that, Leon opened the door, returning to his own world. It was the late night, darkness enveloped the city, and the glow of streetlights illuminated the empty streets.
He heard the sound of armor clinking behind him. He turned around and saw the Prince following him.
“Why are you following me?”
The Prince shrank his neck and said, “I was alone in the tavern, and it felt eerie inside. I had a bad feeling, so I decided to hide in your world for a while.”
