- Chapter 12 : Types of Gold Coins
After the excitement of the drinks, Glenfiddich took out a key from his pocket and handed it to Leon.
“I came to the bar today to give you this key. From now on, you can freely enter and exit this place. You can even consider it your home and live here if you want,” he said.
Leon took the key, a simple brass key about 5 centimeters long with some wear, seemingly unremarkable. He thought for a moment, realizing that he could transform the lounge into his room if he moved in, saving on rent and making it convenient for work. However, the presence of Elise and Nilu coming into the lounge during work hours, coupled with the lack of a restroom or shower here, made it a bit inconvenient. After he received his salary, he could move to a nearby apartment and rent a single-person unit, avoiding the need to share with others. So, he currently had no plans to move in.
After handing the key to Leon, Glenfiddich left the bar.
Prince Lieyang, unsuccessful in trying to strike up a conversation with Karina, also prepared to leave.
“Guest, your gemstone,” Leon reminded him.
Prince Lieyang did not take the ruby from the bar counter, seemingly forgetting that he had taken it out of his pocket. Leon stopped him.
“How could I take something back that I’ve already given away?” the prince said as he left the bar.
Leon couldn’t help but feel that despite the prince’s arrogance, he had his own principles, making him quite cute from that perspective.
Lanya stared at the ruby in Leon’s hand, her eyes glowing. “A gemstone like this is worth at least one thousand gold coins.”
“If you want it, you can have it. Take it and exchange it for gold coins to enjoy some good food,” Leon replied.
He wasn’t sure about the prices in this world, but something from a prince’s hands shouldn’t be too cheap, and he didn’t feel right offering it to buy her favor. So, this gemstone should be enough to support her for quite some time.
Lanya looked surprised as she gazed at the gemstone Leon handed to her, but she didn’t reach out to take it.
“I haven’t done anything, how can I accept such a valuable gift for free? Thank you, but I can’t take it,” she said.
Leon thought for a moment and phrased it differently.
“Then, can you help me exchange it for gold coins? You can keep a hundred gold coins as your reward. You up for the task?” he asked.
This time, Lanya nodded eagerly. “Sure, I’ll help you.” She took the ruby and ran towards the bar’s entrance.
“Oh, and take a hundred gold coins for yourself from the exchanged amount and treat yourself to a nice meal,” Leon called after her.
Lanya nodded vigorously, as if she had received an official mission, and left the bar.
Around an hour later, Lanya returned to the bar with a small money pouch in her hands, her face red with excitement. She had never held so many gold coins before.
She raised the money pouch and placed it on the bar counter. “A total of 1150 gold coins. Please count them,” she said.
Leon was a little surprised. The money pouch was just slightly larger than his fist, so how could it fit over a thousand gold coins? Could it be a magical storage item?
When he opened the money pouch, he found only twelve gold coins inside.
“Why are there only twelve coins?” he asked.
Lanya explained, “There are eleven 100-gold coins and one 50-gold coin, making a total of 1150 gold coins.”
Leon arranged the twelve coins neatly after pouring them out, and he indeed noticed one coin that was slightly smaller and had a different design from the rest.
He smiled, “I thought there were 1150 individual gold coins.
Lanya shook her head and said, “No, the gold coins here aren’t made of pure gold. They are made of various metals melted together with a certain amount of gold added. Based on the gold content, they are divided into 1-gold, 5-gold, 10-gold, 50-gold, and 100-gold coins. The 100-gold coins are almost pure gold.”
Leon understood and put the twelve coins back into the pouch, returning it to Lanya.
“Keep it with you for now, and don’t forget your hundred gold coins.”
Leon had seen him buy things at the convenience store using something other than gold coins, so he assumed Lanya could hold onto it for him.
“Sure, I’ll keep it safe for you,” Lanya nodded earnestly.
Then, she waited inside the bar with Leon until he finished work.
On his third day of working at the Emerald Bar, no new customers appeared.
When it was time to finish work, the clock on the wall suddenly chimed. A crow popped out of the dark brown wooden clock, cawing twice before retreating back into the clock.
Leon entered the lounge to change his clothes. Nilu was still lying on the sofa, sleeping soundly in an unsightly position. He shook his head and decided not to wake her, going to the wardrobe instead to take off his shirt and prepare to change into his own clothes. Suddenly, he heard Lanya’s startled cry from outside the lounge.
He turned his head and saw a pair of excited eyes peering through the gap in the door. By the side of the door hung a few strands of red hair, and Leon instantly recognized the identity of the peeping intruder.
“Damn it, Karina!”
He quickly put on his clothes, not even buttoning them up properly, and rushed out of the lounge, but Karina was nowhere to be seen. Only Lanya was standing at the entrance, her face flushed and her breath slightly laboured.
“I didn’t see anything! She covered my mouth and forcibly dragged me to the door,” Lanya explained in a flustered manner.
“Where is she?”
“She ran away.
“Hmph, she’s lucky she’s fast,” Leon said, loosening his tightly clenched fist.
Elise’s gloating voice came from the side. “Even if you catch up to her, you can’t beat her. But if you’re willing to give up your position behind the bar, I can help you deal with her.”
“Thanks for the offer, but there’s no need,” Leon replied.
He was thinking that if he lured Karina to Earth, her strength might be suppressed like Lanya’s. In that case, he would have a chance to teach her a lesson. But for now, he had to go with Lanya to register at the Adventurers’ Guild, so he decided to let her off temporarily.
After Lanya opened the wooden door of the bar, Leon followed her out. The warm sun immediately shone upon them, revealing a bustling street in front of him.
He scanned the surroundings and saw Minotaurs, pointed-eared elves, lizardmen covered in black scales, heavily armoured warriors, staff-wielding mages concealed in black robes, and strange creatures shaped like mice, among others.
The street was lined with medieval-style buildings, filled with various shops, with a few fruit stands scattered in between.
Leon turned back to look at the Emerald Bar, but now the sign on the door displayed characters he couldn’t recognize.
“This is the city in the other world?” he asked.
Lanya smiled and introduced, “This is the North Commercial Street of Castalonne, Uradaha Main Street.”
At that moment, Leon felt something in his pants jump, and a strange noise came from it.
“Croak.”
